blackberry-bold-9900-reviewAfter being down for the past few days, it looks like RIM has finally repaired its BlackBerry services. The company announced in a conference call earlier this morning that all BlackBerry services have been restored globally. RIM will now be closely monitoring and placing safeguards on its networks and servers to make sure that such events never occur again. RIM is also considering how it will be reimbursing carriers and users for the disruptions this week. No word on what or how BlackBerry users will be compensated, but we should expect to find out more pretty soon.

How’s your BlackBerry phone? Are you still having trouble with BlackBerry services?

Blackberry services down in Europe, Middle East, Africa

Heads up Blackberry users in the Europe, Middle East and Africa, it looks like RIM is facing some technical issues which might be able to explain why you are having issues accessing certain features on your phones. This seems to have been confirmed by a variety of carriers in those particular regions, such as T-Mobile UK, Vodafone Egypt and Batelco in Bahrain.

Since this appears to be a RIM issue, users should still be able to make phone calls and send out regular text messages, but we’re guessing that retrieving emails and sending out BBMs might prove to be a bit of a problem, at least for now.

There has been no word from RIM on when they might be able to get this issue sorted out, but for now given their somewhat precarious position in the smartphone market, such occurrences shouldn’t even be happening in the first place. The good news for corporate users of Blackberry devices is that if your company has BES up and running, this outage seems to have not affected it.

RIM unveils Blackberry Tag

RIM unveils Blackberry Tag | Ubergizmo window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.init({ appId : '139683546053659', status : true, // check login status cookie : true, // enable cookies to allow the server to access the session xfbml : true // parse XFBML }); }; (function() { var e = document.createElement('script'); e.src = document.location.protocol + '//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js'; e.async = true; document.getElementById('fb-root').appendChild(e); }()); Network:Ubergizmo English, French, SpanishUberphones Subscribe to RSS Ubergizmo ReviewsMobileGamingAndroidAppleComputersGadgetsConceptsPhoto/VideoEvents |  Jobs Home > CellPhones > RIM unveils Blackberry Tag RIM unveils Blackberry Tag Tyler Lee 10/10/2011 07:36 PDT

Prior to Blackberry 7, owners of Blackberry devices who wanted to swap contact information had to either scan the QR code of the other person’s Blackberry device or add them via the BB pin, but it looks like those days may be behind us as RIM has unveiled the Blackberry Tag.

This new feature is expected to come as part of an update for the Blackberry 7 operating system, and the idea behind Blackberry Tag is one that iOS and Android users who use the “Bump” application should be familiar with. For those unfamiliar with Bump, it’s an app on iOS and Android that lets users share files between each other simply by “bumping” devices together, but while Bump uses a Bluetooth connection, Blackberry Tag will rely on the NFC technology that has been built into the latest Blackberry phones.

Blackberry users will soon be able to swap contact information, share photos, documents, URLs and other multimedia content simply by tapping their Blackberry devices together. RIM also has plans to share the API with developers, hoping that they will take advantage of this feature to create or integrate it into their current Blackberry apps.

BlackBerry Messenger Android

At the beginning of this week we reported about screenshots showing BlackBerry Messenger on Android floating around the internet, well it appears that more photographs have surfaced again, and this time from a different source, which hints at more than one Android device having the BBM app. Now there’s no telling if these screens were faked, or it’s a fake app that’s been making its rounds, but what we do know is that they do look pretty convincing, and we wouldn’t be surprised if BBM did really arrive on Android. After all, it’s already been talked about much earlier this year.

This time around the BBM app has been shown off on a developer’s Android device and we get to see images of the icon again, and the BBM main screen where you get to select the people or groups you would like to message. What do you think of BBM for Android, and do you think that these screenshots are of the real deal? Sound off in the comments below with your opinion. More photos at the source link.

eBayThose of you who love shopping on eBay and wished that you could take your auctions everywhere with you and you have a BlackBerry device, you’re in luck. eBay v2.0 for BlackBerry Smartphones has just been released for BlackBerry phones. Only available from the BlackBerry Beta Zone at the moment, eBay 2.0 has new features such as BBM integration, and a new user interface. In fact there’s some new things you could do with the app you couldn’t do before.

Users of the app can now create and publish listings for things they want to sell from their device itself. With integration of the BlackBerry Camera, you can easily take pictures of what you want to auction off. eBay 2.0 for BlackBerry also features an improved buying experience that makes it easier to find what you’re looking for. Unfortunately the app and the selling feature isn’t available all over the world yet – the option to create a listing is currently available for the UK and the US eBay sites, while the app is only available in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US. Just head over to the BlackBerry Beta Zone to download it.

Future Blackberry devices can use NFC to open doors

NFC can be used for a variety of reasons, although at the moment it seems largely aimed at mobile payments. RIM however, has decide to expand on the possibilities of NFC in their handsets and have teamed up with HID Global to enable NFC in smartphones to be used as key cards for opening doors.

As we all know, the latest lineup of Blackberry devices have come with NFC chips in them. Unfortunately at the moment it appears that NFC has been disabled by the major carriers in the US, although we’re not sure if this is the case with Blackberry devices in overseas countries. Either way, if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one of RIM’s latest Blackberry smartphone with NFC enabled, HID Global who produces access card systems for door locks, will produce a reader for doors starting in 2012 that can be used with Blackberry devices.

This feature would allow users to tap their Blackberry devices on the lock to open the door, assuming of course they have been authorized. This sounds like a great idea especially for companies that use Blackberry Enterprise Server, as the IT managers can easily grant/revoke access to various parts of the building.

BlackBerry PlayBook prices drop in Canada

BlackBerry PlayBook
After disappointing Q2 results from RIM this year, especially in terms of PlayBook sales, RIM announced that it would be discounting the QNX tablet - but with incentive programs, rebates and deals. However, it looks like retailers in Canada have other plans in mind and have started reducing the price tag of the PlayBook instead. According to reports online, the tablet can now be found for prices as low as $249 – depending on where you look.

The 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook has been reported to be available for $249 at certain Walmart outlets (not all of them carry it at that price), while Best Buy and Future Shop are selling it at $299.99, $399.99 and $499.99 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models respectively. While it’s still a long way off from the $99 firesale that HP had with its TouchPad tablets, it’s better than no discount at all. No word on when we’ll start seeing the PlayBook discounted in our stores though. Any of you waiting for the price cut to pick up a PlayBook for yourselves?
