The Five Forms of Plagiarism in the Urdu Literature

Plagiarism is a downright immoral and disgusting. However, somehow the people simply cannot stop doing it. There are five forms of plagiarism, which are the most rampant in the Urdu literature.

1. Idea Stealing

The most common form of the plagiarism in the Urdu literature is that people steal ideas and never give credit to the real authors. It is a huge offence. The idea stealing happens in most of the forms of the Urdu literature. Especially in the books of philosophy, this thing happens a lot. The copycat simply says that I thought of exactly the same thing! However, this is deplorable.

It also happens with the ideas of the stories and novels too. Some people steal the entire plot and just change the names of the places and the characters. Some change the time period or the setting of the novel.

2. Character Stealing

The other copycats steal the character from somebody else's novels. This is done very cleverly. Indeed, it is actually a clever form of plagiarism. In this way, the writer does not have to work hard to form believable characters in the story. When the character is made, the story flows along. Most of the hard work is required in the character building. After wards writing the dialogues or the story line does not remain a problem this is especially true for the short stories. For the novels too if the couple of characters are stolen the workload reduces by a significant factor.

3. Example, Simile, and Metaphor Stealing

The use of examples, similes, and metaphors in the Urdu literature is considered very smart. This is the reason why the writers who wrote such stories and novels become very famous. The most prestigious example of such writers is the philosophical couple of Ashfaq Ahmed and Bano Qudsia. Right now, many contemporary writers are continuously stealing examples, similes, and metaphors from the writings of these two writers. This is blatantly bad, people steal from the work of the dead or the very old writers because they know they will not be able to start or pursue a legal fight.

4. Excerpts

Some people go to the extent of stealing the excerpts. Again, this is often done from the write-ups of the dead writers. Often people steal the whole dialogues between two characters. Sometimes people steal some very good lines by a character. The excerpts are also stolen from the philosophy books and the real writer is never given the credits. Sometimes people steal excerpts from the speeches of the popular people who are dead and never mention their names.

5. Printing without copyrights

To print without the permission of a writer or without buying the copyrights is also a very famous form of plagiarism. People are doing it, online and offline all the time. This too is a very huge offense. This is high time that the authorities must do something about the problem of the plagiarism in the Urdu literature. Otherwise, it might be too late.

Indicating Plagiarism in the Urdu Literature and Ways to Eliminate It

The Urdu is suffering from a very bad fate due to the plagiarism these days. Undoubtedly, the Urdu language, both prose and poetry has seen some great writers, authors, columnists, and poets. However, it is a great discouragement and disappointment for them to see their excellent pieces of literature or the poetry being plagiarized.

Following are the major types of the plagiarism in the Urdu literature and some practical ways to eliminate it.

Types of plagiarism

Idea stealing

This is the most common form of plagiarism. Many so-called Urdu writers or poets steal ideas of others and publish in their names.

Shameless Lifting

This is an extremely bad, in fact, evil trend in this country that people shamelessly lift pieces of other and publish it. It is rampant in two ways.

Common people lift literary works of great Urdu writers and send them to be published in weekly magazines and monthly digests etc.

the publishing houses publish plagiarized Urdu books.

Unaccredited translations

The Urdu weekly magazines and monthly digests are replete with the unaccredited translations. This is also a very bad trend of the Pakistani magazines. People get money for the Urdu pieces that they never wrote but only translated.

Unaccredited compilations

The publishing houses compile the excellent literary pieces, essays, stories pr poems by several different writers and poets. They neither ask for the permission of the writers and poets nor give them any part in the immense profits that they make from such Urdu books.

Ways to eliminate plagiarism

Strict regulations

With the internet boom and all the sate of plagiarism in the Urdu literature is even on the rise. The laws about plagiarism are outdated and confusing. The government needs to pass strict laws to eliminate the plagiarism from the Urdu literature.

The rule of law

Along with passing the laws the government must also make sure that, they are implemented. This is especially important in Pakistan. Here often rules are made but they are never implemented.

Breaking the monopoly of the publishing houses

The state of the publishing houses in the country is also worthy of the discussion. In Pakistan, there are only some publishing houses. These few publishing houses have made their monopoly in the books publishing. They aid the plagiarism to make huge profits for themselves. If the monopoly of these publishing houses is broken and the new smaller publishers are given a chance then the situation can improve a lot. The Urdu literature can also survive this way only.

Respect for the literature of other languages and countries

We also need to make the masses have a respect for languages other than Urdu. Here the general attitude of the public is that they do not give any importance to the fact that the unaccredited translations are simply stealing. This is earning Urdu an extremely bad name in the international community.

We will have to respect others languages if we want our language to be respected.

Ways of Fighting the Plagiarism in the Urdu Literature

The Urdu language started from poetry. In the beginning there were no novels in the Urdu language however soon the trend of novels and short story writing picked up in Urdu language. So in fact, the Urdu literature started off at a very good base. Both the poetry and the prose were well received by the masses as it used to stimulate the minds intellectually.

As with any other literature the Urdu literature too continued to evolve. The evolution is a test of the health of any literature and the Urdu literature successfully passed this test. The Urdu language has always been fortunate enough to have extremely good writers and poets on board.

However there is one acute problem which can sap the vitality of the Urdu literature. This problem is the plagiarism in the Urdu literature. Unfortunately the plagiarism in the Urdu literature is much more than the literature of other languages. There are several reasons for this trend. The main reason is the lack of ethical awareness among the masses and publishers desire to make money through the wrong means.

The following are the some ways through which the plagiarism in the Urdu literature can be fought and be eventually eradicated.

Passing and implementing strict copyright laws and punishments

If we see the developed nations in this regard, we would immediately notice about their strict copyright laws and policies. It is because the governments of these nations deeply respect their artists, poets and the authors.

Introducing strict punishments for people who plagiarize stuff is the right way to deal with this problem.

Cooperation of different countries, especially India and Pakistan

The Urdu speaking communities are all over the world. Most of the literature activities are going on I India, Pakistan, U.K and the Middle East. Sometimes the publishers lift the intellectual property of a person residing in a different country and publish it with a different name. The original author does not know what to do about it. This practice is very common between the people of India and Pakistan. Both countries do not respect each other right in this regard. The need of the time is that these countries should cooperate with each other to fight the plagiarism.

Creating awareness among the masses

The people of the subcontinent too are not much aware of the terms, "artists' rights" or the 'intellectual property'. So they do not know how to respect it. Public awareness must be created in the subcontinent, so that people stop buying plagiarized Urdu books. This trend would discourage the publishers who publish plagiarized books.

Controlling the price of the original books

Sometimes the extremely high prices of the books by the original authors push people to look for the copied versions. Many people are aware that it is plagiarism and it is wrong but they say that they cannot afford buying original Urdu books. There must be a price control authority for the books of Urdu literature to keep the prices in check.
