One of the greatest challenges in a rural setting would be the lack of medical facilities – and having the right equipment is vital to keeping one alive, especially in an emergecy situation. Well, while around 50% of all Africans own a cell phone, the majority of the cell phone owners will be unable to access proper medical services when required. This is not good news, especially when a disease responsible for killing many Africans being tuberculous pericarditis, can easily be diagnosed with a standard stethoscope in order to address it with the right kind of treatment.

Necessity being the mother of all invention has moved a team of researchers from the University of Oxford to work on a new kind of stethoscope which will rely on the microphone input of a cell phone. This is a basic stethoscope at best, sporting an external microphone that is attached to the base of an egg-cup in order to focus and collect any sound.

All phonocardiograms recorded can be analyzed by a computer in order to filter out distortion and noise, while processing the signal in order to identify the heart rate and abnormal heart sounds. Nice to know that an iPhone 3G and a Nokia 3100 Classic have been tested to work as an impromptu stethoscope with success, where the Finnish handset actually outperformed a 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscope in detecting heart rate.

Netflix app AndroidGreat news, Netflix users. After all the bad press that the video on demand service has been getting recently, it looks like Netflix is finally doing something that consumers approve of. The latest version of the Netflix app for Android that just hit the Android Market has been updated to work on all Android devices that are running Froyo (2.2) or Gingerbread (2.3). I wonder what happened to the Qualcomm exclusivity.

Either way, you no longer have to resort to running that hacked APK that you can’t update through the Android Market and have no official support for. Head over to the Android Market to get your hands on the latest version of Netflix now. Let us know in the comments if it works for your phone.

HTC TITAN and HTC Radar WP7 phones announced

HTC TITAN
Looking forward to the next generation of Windows Phone devices from HTC? You’re in luck. Today, the Taiwanse company announced the launch of two Windows Phone 7 Mango-powered handsets. First up we have the HTC TITAN, and if you looked at the phone’s name and immediately thought “big device” – you wouldn’t be wrong.

The HTC TITAN (previously leaked as the HTC Eternity) features a massive 4.7” display – which is larger than almost every other smartphone on the market (it falls short of matching the 5” Dell Streak and the upcoming 5.3” Samsung Note). Unfortunately the display is somewhat marred by its resolution of only 800 x 480.

The HTC TITAN is powered by a single core 1.5GHz processor, has 512MB of memory, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera, 16GB of internal storage, DLNA support, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and a thickness of only 9.9mm. The phone will of course be running on Windows Phone 7 Mango when it is released this October.

HTC Radar
Next up we have the slightly smaller but not too shabby HTC Radar (previously leaked as the HTC Omega). It has a 3.8” display (800 x 480), but first generation WP specs, featuring a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front facing camera, 512MB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS in a nice brushed aluminum body just like the HTC TITAN, and it will also come with WP7 Mango. The HTC Radar will also go on sale this October, though there’s no mention of any prices for both phones.
