Looking for a new hard disk to store stuff you’ve been downloading and collecting? If that’s you, you find yourself looking to pick up a new hard disk already, here’s a tip: there really isn’t much between the different the two brands you’re looking at. As long as they both feature the same specs, there’s really no reason to pay much more for one model unless the bundled extras are a big deal.

The Verbatim Store n Save external hard disk features a USB 3.0 port (which transfers data at up to 4.8GBit/s, is available in capacities of 1TB, 2TB and 3TB, comes with Nero BackItUp and Burn Essentials’ software, and Green Button  energy-saving software. No mention of when the hard disks will arrive in the US, but they are available in Europe now, with prices starting at $102 (76 Euro) for the 1TB model.

Samsung Apps decides to make a big do out of its second year in existence by unveiling a new version of the Apps Store, with Samsung Apps being made available first to Samsung Wave smartphones that are powered by their very own Bada 2.0 OS, while it will also spread around the world on the rest of the Samsung Galaxy family before the year is over.

A new version often means improvement, and this new Samsung Apps will boast of an improved user interface, updated purchasing options and personalized App recommendation services. Not only that, to sweeten the deal, Samsung will be handing out “presents” that comprise of 30 popular paid applications – and these will be going for free, so knock yourself out with popular titles including Fruit Ninja and Plants vs. Zombies – only to Wave smartphone users though.

Back in May, Nokia announced that it will be getting rid of the Ovi brand – and it looks like the change has started. If you visit the Ovi Store now, you’ll realize that the Ovi logo is now gone and has been replaced by Nokia’s logo instead. The web page title has also been renamed to Nokia Store. However, the URL for the store remains the same and the name Ovi is still present in its apps, so this is definitely a gradual transition. I predict that the name change for the apps will probably arrive with the next major update for it, and people probably won’t realize it straightaway.

But regardless of the name changes, you can expect everything to work as well as they did before. It’s just a cosmetic issue to help tie Nokia’s services and products together. Nokia expects to have the word Ovi gone by the end of 2012. How many of you will be missing Ovi when it’s gone?

It’s hard to deny that the (Apple) App Store is not a huge success, and it looks like Microsoft is taking a page from Apple’s book, as it announced at the BUILD conference this week that Windows 8 will have an app store that users will have to use in order to purchase/download content for the tablet. Fortunately it’s only going to be for the Metro UI version of Windows 8 – “Classic” Windows 8 will still have apps that don’t have to be purchased from the app store. So if you’re a firm believer of purchasing software that’s still distributed in boxes or apps that probably won’t have a chance of making it in the Windows 8 app store, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Windows is still an “open” OS in that respect.
 In addition to having an app store for Windows 8, Microsoft will also be charging developers for having their paid apps distributed on it – taking a 30% cut just like its own Windows Marketplace for Windows Phone 7. No surprise there, but again – this only applies to apps being sold on the app store. So it looks like, developers who plan to create apps for Windows 8 tablets will be asked to distribute apps on the app store, unless they’re fine with creating apps just for classic mode. Having a closed app store has its benefits (like checking for malware and viruses), having both an open and closed option on the same system is better. The iPad certainly can’t claim that. What do you think of the Store-only distribution mechanism for Metro apps?

Apple seems to have this nasty habit of losing their products – last year with the iPhone 4, and this year they have supposedly misplaced the iPhone 5 (although this has yet to be verified), and now it seems that they accidentally gave away a hard drive full of the Apple Store’s internal file server that is supposedly filled with top secret and confidential documents, and this is how it happened.

According to Cult of Mac who broke the story, a tipster sent them an email explaining the situation of how he sent his Mac in for repairs, but due to the hard drive requiring a replacement, he got his Mac back with a brand new hard drive and was handed a hard drive by Apple Genius at the store, which he assumed was his old and dead hard drive.

He then plugged it into a USB enclosure in an attempt to see if he could salvage anything, but when he plugged it in he realized that this was a completely different hard drive and it appeared to be a complete Apple Retail Store server Time Machine backup disk. He then offered to sell the hard drive to Cult of Mac who declined.

He then sent some screen shots of what was on the hard drive and it appeared to have contained “confidential docs, internal manuals, Apple’s sales technics, an Apple store work checklist, products layout, time schedules, pictures and videos of Apple corporate activities that only Apple employees can see, videos of store meetings, business structure and much much much more.”

Cult of Mac reported that the files look legit, but since they did not actually see it for themselves, and since there’s no way of knowing unless someone actually buys the hard drive off him, we’re going to have to take this at face value. Personally I’m just waiting for information regarding the much anticipated iPhone 5; do you think there’s any info stored in the hard drive about Apple’s next-generation iPhone?
