Apple patent suggests using accelerometer and gyroscope to stabilize video recordings

Let’s face it, when taking videos or photos with your phone, your hands will naturally shake and it will be hard to beat the stability that a tripod brings to the table. A newly published patent from Apple has revealed how the Cupertino company has plans to one day make use of the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to compensate for shaky video recordings.

The patent suggests that while stabilization software isn’t new, the processing usually takes up too much resources, which could end up draining the battery really quickly. In addition, current algorithms may generate incorrect estimates therefore not really improving the video at all.

Thanks to gyroscopes and accelerometers found in newer smartphones, the data that it generates will be added to the algorithm, helping improve its efficiency. As we mentioned earlier, the stabilization process could be resource draining, which is why Apple’s solution would be to selectively control the motion stabilization feature, correcting only where it has been deemed necessary by measuring it against a pre-set threshold.

With the iPhone 4’s camera currently favored by many amateur photographers, could this patent also help bring aboard budding videographers who would rather not invest in an expensive video camera, instead relying on just their iPhone?

When it comes to the iPhone 5, the rumors just can’t seem to stop. Unfortunately unlike other handset leaks or rumors, the ones surrounding the iPhone 5 just can’t seem to agree with each other. Some are suggesting it will be a radical change, while some are saying it will be a mild refresh. Some say it will feature an elongated home button with an edge-to-edge display, while others say that the home button will remain the same. Now a screen protector supposedly for the iPhone 5 has just surfaced and it suggests an elongated home button.

Unlike phone components and designs, a screen protector seems more easy to photoshop, so once again it’s best to view this photo with some skepticism. When lined up against the iPhone 4, the screen protector seems to suggest that not only will the next-generation iPhone feature the elongated home button, but that it will be slightly larger as well, which corroborates with a previous iPhone 5 casing that was spotted. Once again – grain of salt, folks!

Many were surprised when Verizon announced that they would not be carrying the much-awaited and highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II Android smartphone. It was an odd move given how the three other major carriers – Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile were rushing to bring it in. Then it was leaked that Verizon had another Samsung device in mind, the Samsung Droid Prime.

The Droid Prime, if the rumors are to be believed, is meant to be a more competitive phone which Verizon plans to use when the iPhone 5 comes out, giving Verizon two worthy handsets to compete against the other carriers. Now in a recent tweet by @GalaxySsupport in response to a user who was asking if he/she should upgrade to the Motorola Droid Bionic, they told the user that he/she should wait, as there is something “worth waiting” for.

TalkAndroid threw out a wild speculation that this wait could very well refer to either the Droid Prime or Nexus Prime Android handsets that Samsung is allegedly making, but we’re thinking that Samsung would obviously never tweet a reply to their customers telling them to go for the competitor’s phones over theirs, right?

Either way with the iPhone 5 rumored to be released in October, we can imagine that the Droid Prime and Nexus Prime shouldn’t too far behind, but what do you guys think? Are we reading too much into a seemingly innocuous tweet or is there more than meets the eye?
