The Hemingway Days Festival is celebrated every year in the month of July in Key West, Florida, USA. Thousands of literature lovers and fans of 'Men Without Women' and other masterpieces of Ernest Hemingway gather in this region for the annual celebration of the internationally acclaimed festival. Though storms are not a new thing in the subtropical part of this area, this southernmost island in the Florida Keys goes through a fantastic surge of white beards for one week every July.
The Hemingway Look-Alike Contest is held in which participants come with white beards, barrel chests and booming voices. The contest attracts 150 aspirants to Sloppy Joe's Bar, where 'Papa' spent most of the 1930s slamming back daiquiris. Hemingway's fans come here from as far afield as Kazakhstan. One Vladimir Malikov sold all his property to attend the festival in 2004. Other events include the 'Running of the Bulls' and a competition dedicated to his favorite sport in Key West. The blue marlin tournament has cash prizes of more than $250,000.
Other famous attraction include a one-man play about Papa, tours of his house and writing studio, a short story competition, and a wrestling contest. To enjoy the festival, people must have some knowledge of Hemingway's great works, most of which were written in Key West. Another attraction in Key West is the Museum of Art and History. In this museum, the exhibits focus on the literary legend's life in the Florida Keys, presenting some rare family photos, documents and memorabilia.
