Amazon Silk Web Browser raises privacy concerns

Amazon SilkWe’ve previously mentioned that Amazon’s Silk Web Browser isn’t exactly new technology – Opera has been doing it for years now. While the latter company has gone about its business without raising any concerns, it looks like Amazon isn’t faring too well in this department. In case you need a refresher, Amazon’s Silk Web Browser is a web browser for its upcoming Kindle Fire tablet, that lets users surf the web at blazing speeds due to its optimization technology. Every page you visit with the browser, Amazon optimizes and compresses it on its own servers before you even get to read it on the tablet, hence the increased speed and faster load times.

But because every page goes through Amazon’s servers, the company is capable of collecting and storing information about your surfing habits. What sort of sites you like to visit, how long you spend on them, and what you do there – Amazon can have access to all those details. Now it may not be a big deal to some people but it looks like the Congress of the United States has a problem with it. Because of that, Ed Markey, co-Chair of the Congressional Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus has posed the following questions to Amazon and expects answers in the next few weeks:

What information does Amazon plan to collect about users of the Kindle Fire?

How does Amazon intend to use this information?

How will Amazon convey its privacy policy to Fire and Silk users?

If Amazon plans to collect information about its users’ Internet browsing habits, will customers be able to affirmatively opt in to participate in the data sharing program?

Amazon has previously mentioned that data collected will be anonymous and that users have the option to turn off feature if they wish, so it’s puzzling to why Congress would make a big fuss about this. Not to mention, if users are unhappy with Silk, they could always just download another browser for the tablet – after all, that’s the beauty of Android: customization. No word on what Congress will do if they are unsatisfied with Amazon’s answers, but what is your take on the issue? Do you have a problem with Amazon collecting data with its Silk Web Browser?

Amazon might have set the tech world ablaze with their recent tablet announcement, which is the Amazon Kindle Fire (check out our hands-on), and we have word that the company’s next tablet which is a 10.1? model that is tipped to roll out next year will be looking towards Foxconn to manufacture it.

Foxconn was in talks to develop the 7? Kindle Fire but “reportedly decided to not take the 7-inch tablet PC orders as the company has been busily working on iPads for Apple” according to sources, which means that rival Quanta Computer managed to pick up the pieces (which also amounts to quite a substantial sum to say the least).

Well, let us hope that there won’t be any more mishaps at Foxconn’s factories in the future so that the world will not suffer from a shortage of iPhones or Kindle Fires.

There are whispers of an Amazon press conference which will be held this coming September 28th – that is just five days away, and the obvious candidate for an announcement would be the long awaited Amazon tablet. We still do not know much about the upcoming tablet apart from the fact that it, like the end of the world, is coming.

Amazon already has the website (that is tablet-friendly, of course) in place, and for additional details, you can check out our previous story here. What’s your take on this press conference – will it be a pre-emptive strike against the iPhone 5's imminent release? Granted, both are very different devices, but they are sure to make ripples in the gadget market.

Amazon Appstore available out of the US?

Amazon Appstore available out of the US? George Wong 09/20/2011 07:04 PDT

Amazon Appstore HomepageAs most of you know by now, the Amazon Appstore is only available to folks in the US (though there are tricks to get around it) but earlier today, there have been reports of people accessing it from overseas. Amazon didn’t make any announcements about it, so it’s either the case of a silent launch or an error on Amazon’s part. Regardless, folks in Australia, Netherlands, India, the UK, Canada and more countries around the world have reported that they’ve been able to download apps from the Amazon Appstore.

Because local Amazon sites (in those countries) have no links to the Appstore, they were able to access it through the American Amazon site. Not all folks have been successful at accessing it though, so it most probably is due to a mistake in the system’s geo-blocking. In the meantime, if you’re not from the US, why don’t you give the Amazon Appstore a try and let us know how it goes for you. No word on how long this “breach” in access restriction will last, but if you’re one of the lucky ones who can use the Appstore, you can get your fix of the free “app of the day” until it ends – but here’s to hoping that Amazon finally opens the Appstore up to international users.

Amazon Kindle to let readers question authors

Kindle logoDon’t you just hate it when you finish reading a book and you’re still stumped about one part of the story, and none of your friends seem to be able to explain it either? Sure you could look it up on Google, or ask a question on Yahoo! Answers – but nobody seems to know the answer, what do you do then? Since not every author has his/her contact details published online, it might be hard to get in touch with them to ask them for a direct answer. Because of that, Amazon has decided to launch a new program which solves this problem.

Amazon recently launched a test version of Kindle that gives users the ability to question authors about their work. Called the @author feature, it lets Kindle users highlight passages in an eBook, add questions about the passage and send them off to the book’s author(s) to get a response from them. If you ask me, that’s a pretty smart idea – why didn’t other eBook companies think of it sooner? So far only 16 authors have taken part in the program, but we should expect more of them to join in the future.

What do you think of the @author feature in Kindle? Is it something that you’d find useful?

Jaycee Dugard's memoir 'A Stolen Life' shoots to No. 1 on AmazonJuly 11, 2011 | 12:16amincrease text sizedecrease text size

Jayceedugardstolenlife
After a primetime interview with Diane Sawyer Sunday night, Jaycee Dugard's memoir "A Stolen Life" shot to the No. 1 bestseller spot on Amazon. Dugard, who spent an astonishing 18 years in captivity after being kidnapped by convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido, came across as centered and thoughtful during the interview.

Her strong presence during the ABC interview may have been what compelled readers to pre-order her book. "A Stolen Life: A Memoir," which officially goes on sale Tuesday, has only spent nine days out of the last 100 in Amazon's top 100, where it is now a step above George R.R. Martin's much-anticipated "A Dance with Dragons."

Dugard was 11 years old when she was kidnapped in 1991 by Garrido and his wife Nancy and was kept a secret prisoner in their backyard until she was found in 2009. During that time, she lived in makeshift shelters; was bound and raped; and gave birth in the backyard to two daughters.

Garrido was convicted of rape and kidnapping in the late 1970s, and was on parole when he kidnapped Dugard. The ABC News story made clear that officials had dozens of opportunities to discover Dugard but had failed. Dugard and her family received a $20 million settlement from the state after filing a claim that said authorities failed to properly supervise Garrido.

In the interview, Dugard explained that early on her only companion was a spider she called "Bianca."

"I would live in my own world," Dugard told Sawyer. "Physical abuse was all I knew."

Later, when her daughter was born, Dugard said, "she was beautiful. ...I felt like I wasn't alone anymore. I knew I could never let anything happen to her."

Dugard had only a fifth grade education when she was kidnapped, but she tried to create a school for her children. She also hid away pages on which she wrote a diary.

Her spokeswoman Nancy Seltzer has said that Dugard did not have a ghost writer when working on "A Stolen Life." Dugard narrates the audio book.
