It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the HTC Ruby, and it looks like the Android phone might be close to an official unveiling. Pocketnow has yet again managed to get their hands on the press shot of the phone, giving us a clearer look at the phone. Destined to arrive on T-Mobile’s network, the HTC Ruby packs some pretty good specs that will no doubt pique the interest of anyone looking for a powerful Android device.

It packs a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3? qHD display, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera (HD-video capable), a 2-megapixel front facing camera, NFC capabilities and HSPA+ connectivity. No official word on pricing or a release date, but the phone is expected to arrive on October 26th 2011. Anybody thinking of picking up this phone when it goes on sale next month?

The HTC Amaze 4G is also known as the HTC Ruby in certain quarters, and while nothing really concrete or clear of the smartphone was spotted, here is the first set of leaked press shots that is accompanied by a list of specifications so that you know what you’re getting before throwing your lot in with the Amaze 4G.

It is rumored to come with a 4.3? qHD display (at 960 x 540 resolution)that certainly does its bit to keep up with the Joneses, while you certainly won’t find speed lacking thanks to a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor. That will definitely be aided by throwing in 1GB RAM, while an 8-megapixel camera is located at the back to capture memories on the go. It seems as though CellphoneSignal who obtained the leaked press shots claim that this will replace the myTouch 4G, which is rather strange since the Amaze 4G has no myTouch branding, although the design could come close.

Fancy making video calls? That should not be a problem with a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, while you have Android 2.3 Gingerbread running right out of the box, not to mention Bluetooth 3.0 and HSPA+ connectivity. No idea on how much it will cost, but expect it to cozy up to high end models.

There are whispers of an Amazon press conference which will be held this coming September 28th – that is just five days away, and the obvious candidate for an announcement would be the long awaited Amazon tablet. We still do not know much about the upcoming tablet apart from the fact that it, like the end of the world, is coming.

Amazon already has the website (that is tablet-friendly, of course) in place, and for additional details, you can check out our previous story here. What’s your take on this press conference – will it be a pre-emptive strike against the iPhone 5's imminent release? Granted, both are very different devices, but they are sure to make ripples in the gadget market.

HTC’s upcoming super HD resolution phone, the HTC Vigor (rumored to be renamed DROID Incredible HD) has finally been revealed in leaked press shots, and lo and behold – it looks like just another HTC phone. Not that we were expecting anything radically different, but I think it’s about time HTC tries something different with its phone designs – what do you think?

With the press shots of the HTC Vigor/DROID Incredible HD ready at this point in time, there’s a possibility that we’ll be seeing it at the HTC announcement on the 20th. And if the “leaked specs” for the phone turn out to be the real deal, we sure can’t wait for it to be officially announced. Keep those fingers crossed.

Facing cutbacks, UC Press will suspend poetry seriesJuly 19, 2011 |  9:00am

With still to-be-determined state budget cuts looming, University of California Press has decided to suspend the publication of its poetry book series New California Poetry. The press expects to take a cut of about 10% in direct funding from the University of California.

It's not just the expected cuts that motivated the suspension of New California Poetry. Director Alison Mudditt, whose appointment was announced in December, told The Times that the shifting marketplace for books and publishing are of even greater concern. "The far bigger challenges are the structural ones to our industry and markets which (not unlike the newspaper industry!) require us to rethink and retool to remain a vibrant and relevant voice in the digital age," she wrote in an email. "I've only been here six months, and much of my focus has been on developing strategies to meet these challenges."

In November, shortly before Mudditt joined UC Press, it had a surprise hit with the 738-page "Autobiography of Mark Twain." Published 100 years after the classic American humorist's death, the book reached an unexpectedly wide audience, hitting national bestseller lists. Two subsequent books concluding Twain's autobiography will be published in the coming years.

But one bestseller -- and its sequels, with any luck -- cannot forge an entire press. UC Press is both large and largely academic. In addition to the poetry series, it currently maintains 15 to 20 other book series, and many of its books aren't included in those series at all. Many of the books it publishes each year are geared for specialized, scholarly audiences. 2010's titles included "Aristotle and Xenophon on Democracy and Oligarchy," "Essentials of Paleomagnetism," "Reproduction and Sexuality in Marine Fishes: Patterns and Processes," "Studying Global Pentecostalism: Theories and Methods," "Objects as History in Twentieth-Century German Art: Beckmann to Beuys" and "Sand: The Never-Ending Story."

The books in the "New California Poetry" series, Mudditt explains, frequently find a limited audience. "Most titles sell around 1,000 copies," she wrote, emphasizing that the series "requires substantial support."

“They have been wonderfully committed to poetry," Forrest Gander of Brown University told the Chronicle of Education's PageView blog. "They haven't been making money on the series, anyway. And they have allowed the editors to choose work based on the quality of the work and not on the potential for sales, which is a big deal." Gander has served as one of four editors on the series, which launched in 2000; it has published 33 titles by 25 poets.

The series has received plenty of acclaim, and sometimes critical attention has created momentum for a title. "Sleeping with the Dictionary" by Harryette Mullen won the National Book Award and sold about 15 times more than the average "New California Poetry" collection. 

UC Press will publish three titles in the series in 2012 and, though it is not currently reviewing manuscripts for 2013, it is working to secure the kind of funding it would take to relaunch the series in the future.

Literature Post Printing Press

Far more people found themselves becoming literate post the invention of the printing press. The price of books dropped to a point where the average person could afford literature that interested them. One could argue that the economics and the free market made his point more relevant in present day than at any point before. For the simple reason that the popular literature among the masses was published at a much higher rate than other works.

Fiction that uses basic language, rhetoric, and style has a far higher chance of commercial success. Reason for this is generally considered to be the readers ease in consuming a specific text. Literature using high style and complex verse is much more difficult to enjoy while reading. To enjoy such work requires a trained mind. Although less work receives acclaim through high style, there is certainly still a niche of people who love this kind of work. Shakespeare did not write fiction novels but he can be looked at as an author who is appreciated to this day as a master. His published work featured more unique words than any other writer can boast in the history. Shakespeare is not read by the general public. It has been scholars who have kept his work alive because they have found it such a beneficial learning tool.

On the other end of the literature spectrum is work with significant commercial appeal like Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling uses very simple language and found great financial success. How does something low brow like Harry Potter gain such undeniable popularity? The answer has many folds and requires further analyzing. Rowling's limited repertoire did not hinder her ability to describe vividly, a fictional world of wizardry.
