Vampires and Twentieth Century Literature

The idea for using vampires as characters in the literary works of the twentieth century was taken from the famous Dracula by Bram Stoker. The novel was then adapted into cinema which was an emerging medium during that time period. Stoker's work, however, was not restricted to the horror and Gothic novels with the description of ghastly deaths and incidents dealing with the dark.

The twin works of Gustave Le Rogue, published in 1908 and 1909 gave an introduction to science fiction and idea of life on other planets. He depicted creatures with wings and blood sucking fangs living on Mars. This was the first time that the trait of wings was given to vampires and from this trait came the connection of vampires and bats.

The first movie that featured vampires was the one that adapted Dracula into cinema. After that, vampires got more spotlight in horror movies that had gothic themes. Science fiction that included vampires was fairly used in cinema. In 2207, Richard Matheson's movie, I am Legend was released and it showed nocturnal creatures surviving on the blood of live human beings. This movie also depicted that Vampirism is a result of the wrong doings of human beings and it also shows that developing a cure for it is possible.

There was a great amount of literary work on Vampires in the later half of the twentieth century. Between 1966 and 1971, Barnabas Collins Series, a work by Marilyn Ross was released which became the first to use vampires in literary works in the forms of sequels and series rather than singular novels. Another series called Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice followed it. Literary works in the form of series that had become common in this period continue to be written even to this date as mega series.

Vampires Literatures in 21st Century

The vampires' literature continued in twenty first century with increased enthusiasm. Many novels based on the theme of vampires' hunger for human blood continued to be written. A quite a few of the series continued with some ending and new series began to written. For the first time Anne Rice introduced the concept of paranormal romance and asexuality was brought into Vampire tales. Though the romance was the beginning of the vampire tales yet the sexuality was not that prominent in the literary works of previous generations. Perhaps the twenty first century's contribution to vampire tales was sexuality. The prominent work in this regards remains that o Stephanie Meyer's Twilight Saga.

The Vampires tales now came to be written with romance and sexuality. The romance in more aggressive form became the main stay of this novels and series that began to written. But the new addition was sexuality and erotica. Often the protagonist of this novel would be handsome young man with vampires like characteristics but conveniently hidden to seduce women and make it tale of erotic and romantic with horror gothic themes. The extent of presence of erotica in the twenty first century writings is quite prominent and is perhaps for a reason.

The literary works on Vampires targeted at young readers and juvenile readers would for sure dwell on the theme of romance erotica and sexuality. Prior to twenty first century the writers were very conservative when it came to treatment of eroticism in the literary works. Perhaps this is explainable in from the fact that the society was very conservative in terms of sexuality and hence writers also were conservative with respect to their treatment of eroticism and sexuality of the protagonists in their literary works. The Vampires tales till now take inspiration from the legendry novel Dracula by Stokers.

How Can You Make 18th Century Literature Funny?

Ricky Gervais is a funny man, he is also an inspiration to many people as he has managed to single handedly craft himself a career off the back of the successful office series, which has lead him to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and films and award ceremonies.

Ricky's latest film which has just been released on DVD is the invention of lying in which he plays a film producer who is tasked with making film about 18th century literature. It is something that you find out over the course of the film has held him back and made his life a misery.

While Ricky's character is stuck producing 18th century literature films, his arch nemesis Rob Lowe is producing films about the 19th century and making all the money and acquiring all the fame, this is until of course Ricky discovers lying. In a world where no-one can lie, he becomes a god, bending the truth to suit his needs and get what he wants apart from the girl of his dreams.

Ricky decides to spice up his 18th century literature by elaborating on the truth a little bit when he claims that the earth was visited by aliens and there was communication between the humans and aliens. As no-one else on the planet can tell a lie, all of this is believed at factual truth. It certainly puts a whole new spin on 18th century literature.

The film then takes a dramatic swing when Ricky Gervais' character Mark has to rush to the hospital to be with his dying mum. In her final moments she confesses to being scared about the end of life and Mark makes up a lie that will see him get into bit of a pickle. He claims that there is an afterlife where all people meet up again and it is a happy place where there is no pain. Basically he creates what we all refer to as Heaven.

When other people hear about this they want to know more about this new and mystical place. Mark is then forced to make up a whole story about heaven and hell and sets out a set of rules or commandments on disused pizza boxes. It really does provide an insightful insight into the mind of Ricky Gervais and his thoughts on religion, which may be right and may be wrong, that is not something that is up for discussion in this article. This film makes a lot of firsts; it's bold and brash and makes 18th century literature funny.

20th Century in Literature

Over the period of time, literature has played a major role in our life. As it is, before the arrival of television and radios, literature was the only available mode of entertainment, as well as communication of ideas. As it is, the twentieth century is one of the most notable periods of world history and literature too was not left untouched by these vast developments, which took place during this period.

It was the technological advancements during the 20th century which allowed lowering the cost of production of books. This further made way for a substantial increase in production of popular literature as well as trivial literature. It needs to be understood here that the so called division of popular literature and high literature in this period is not marked by any specific demarcation. As a result, this division is not at all absolute. This means that several genres like pulp fiction fluctuate between the two.

Several different genres like science fictions and detective stories played a vital role in maintaining the enthusiasm of the average reader towards literature. Although, they were usually ignored by mainstream literary critics, these genres further developed and later on, set up their establishments, as well as critical awards.

Several literary works of great importance have been churned out during this period, such as Quotations from Chairman Mao. Published in the year 1966, this book managed to sell more than 900 million copies. In recent times, when we talk of best sellers, then no one can ignore the phenomenal success of the Harry Potter series. As it is, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in 1997, sold 120 million copies and made a star of J.K. Rowling.

Other masterpieces of the century include, And Then There Were None, which was published in 1939 and sold to sell more than 115 million copies. Also, a major work of this period is The Lord of the Rings. This magnificent piece of literature sold more than 100 million copies, yet gained much of its acclaim, after the release of the movie trilogy based on it. It was even voted the book of the century in several surveys.

Other major works of fiction include Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf, The Waste Land, by T. S. Eliot, Ulysses by James Joyce, The Trial by Franz Kafka, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Aelita by Alexey Tolstoy, nome della rosa (1980 - English translation: The Name of the Rose, 1983), Il pendolo di Foucault (1988 - English translation: Foucault's Pendulum, 1989) by Umberto Eco Il and Cat's Cradle (1963) and Slaughterhouse Five (1969) by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Several other great works of literature were produced during this period. However, due to paucity of space, mentioning all these brilliant pieces of literature is an absolutely impossible task.
