Plextor limited edition M2P SSDIf speed is what you’re looking for in a hard disk, you would know that Solid State Drives (SSDs) are your best bet, especially if cost isn’t a problem to you. Well, Plextor has just announced the launch of its M2P SSD – a drive that is capable of random read/write speeds of 70,000/65,000 IOPS and sequential read/write speeds up to 500 Mb/s and 440 Mb/s which makes it one fast SSD, if not one of the fastest available on the market.

The Plextor M2P is also said to keep a high level of sustained performance even after extensive usage and long periods of operation. It is powered by a server grade Marvell 88SS9174 controller chip supporting a SATA III 6GB/s interface and Toshiba NAND flash. It also features Plextor’s True Speed technology, and exclusive firmware: Instant Restore, Global Wear Leveling and Bad Block Management.

The Plextor M2P SSDs will be available later this month, and can be purchased from the Plextor online store. They will be available in 128GB (PX-128M2P, $239) and 256GB versions (PX-256M2P, $449). No mention on how many of these limited edition drives will be made/sold though.

Fiat 500 Pink Edition supports the Breast Cancer Research Foundation

If you believe that supporting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) is a good cause that you would like to be a part of, and if you so happen to be shopping for a car at the same time, Fiat has unveiled the 500 Pink Edition car, whereby a portion of the sales will be donated to the BCRF.

The 500 Pink Edition is based off Fiat’s 500 Lounge car and will be available in two colors – Argento (silver), Bianco (white). Apart from the difference in name, the car will pretty much the same, with the exception of a dark pink stripe and a pink ribbon adorning the car as pictured above. This is to show support to the BCRF for the good work that they are doing.

The car itself will retail for $22,500 and Fiat has said that they would donate $1,000 for the BCRF for every Fiat 500 Pink Edition sold. There are only 250 units available, which means for those whose (expensive) hobby is collecting limited edition cars, this could be a rather tempting purchase. However since we do not expect people to buy cars simply because they want to support a cause, Fiat has also confirmed that they will be making a minimum contribution of $50,000 should there not be enough buyers.

Motorola Xoom Family Edition spotted at retail stores

We do know that Motorola’s effort at tablets was not really that successful, but at least they did not let the Xoom go under the water just like how HP left the TouchPad to drown shortly after its release. Well, Motorola decided to spruce up their 10.1? tablet with a bunch of edutainment software, calling it the Motorola Xoom Family Edition that was spotted at an electronics store recently.

So far, it looks pretty much like the vanilla Motorola Xoom without any subwoofer that is expected in the rumored Xoom 2 Media Edition, so don’t expect anything out of the ordinary with this apart from your kids playing with your tablet far more often than you would like them to. There is a Kid Mode in the Xoom Family Edition alongside another $40 of software just for kids from Zoodles.

No idea on an official release date or pricing details, but the Motorola Xoom should arrive at store shelves on an official basis pretty soon.

Kobo eReader Touch Edition arrives in German flavor

Remember the Kobo eReader Touch Edition that we covered slightly more than a week ago that hit Best Buy? Well, it has now arrived in Germany, where over 80,000 German language titles in addition to 2.5 million eBooks are available for your reading pleasure, literally making it the largest eBookstore in Germany by far. Among the popular titles include the Perry Rhodan Series, Stieg Larsson’s “Verdammnis,” “Der ultimative Ratgeber fur alles” (Dieter Nuhr) and “Die Frau an seiner Seite” (Heribert Schwan).

It makes sense for Kobo to roll out the official launch at IFA 2011 which is held in Berlin, Germany, where visitors will be able to give Kobo’s localized German Touch eReader a run for its money right on the spot. Kobo will also put on offer free German-language apps for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android, where there is also an eReading app available for PlayBook as well. Apart from being localized, everything else about the Kobo eReader Touch Edition remains the same in terms of hardware as with the North American version. [Press Release]

The Norton Anthology of English Literature Vol 1 8th Edition

A best-seller for more than forty years, this is the survey of English literature from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. With 274 authors, the Eighth Edition deepens its representation of essential works in all genres, ranging from Seamus Heaney's translation of "Beowulf" to global twentieth-century classics. Over 75 colour plates and thematic clusters of brief and historically significant texts bring to life the cultural concerns of each period. Concise glosses and annotations, period introductions, biographical headnotes, timelines and selected bibliographies help readers understand and enjoy the rich diversity of English literature.

The eighth edition of The Norton Anthology of English Literature comprises six volumes, sold in two sets of three. The first set includes the volumes "The Middle Ages," "The Sixteenth Century and The Early Seventeenth Century," and "Restoration and the Eighteenth Century;" the second set includes "The Romantic Period," "The Victorian Age," and "The Twentieth Century and After." The writings are arranged by author, with each author presented chronologically by date of birth. Historical and biographical information is provided in a series of headnotes for each author and in introductions for each of the time periods.

Within this structure, the anthology incorporates a number of thematically linked "clusters" of texts pertaining to significant contemporary concerns. For example, "The Sixteenth Century and The Early Seventeenth Century" contains four such clusters under the headings, "Literature of The Sacred," "The Wider World," "The Science of Self and World," and "Voices of the War." The first of these includes four contemporary English translations of an identical passage from the Bible, those of William Tyndale, the Geneva Bible, the Douay-Rheims Version, and the Authorized (King James) Version; selections from the writings of influential Protestant thinkers of the period, including Tyndale, John Calvin, Anne Askew, John Foxe and Richard Hooker; as well as selections from the Book of Common Prayer and the Book of Homilies.

Scholarly material that is clearly presented to students of English literature. The historical and literary information is well cross-referenced. For example, information that appears in the introductory passages of a time period (like the Middle Ages) often reappears, in greater detail, while discussing a particular work of that era. The information given is detailed and specific to the topic, yet interesting even as assigned reading.
