Motorola Lapdock 100 – one laptop dock to rule them all

Motorola has just launched the Motorola Lapdock 100, a laptop dock that will work with every current -and future- Webtop-enabled smartphones. If you haven’t heard of Webtop before, it’s a proprietary Motorola “computer mode” that Motorola smartphone can go into when they are connected to a TV or a Lapdock. The phone then turns into a mini Linux laptop with a full desktop browser etc. We mentioned this feature in our recent Motorola Photon 4G Review and in our original Motorola Atrix Review. This move shows that Motorola has listened to critics (like us) who said that having one lapdock for each phone is kinda dumb and that it was preventing the company from ever reaching any sort of economies of scale.

But the change also has one apparent downside: to accommodate every phone design, the Lapdock appears to be chubbier than its predecessors, but it weighs “only” 2.2Lbs. I recommend reading the Atrix review to have a feel for what the Lapdock is capable of in the real world, but to make a long story short, we love the concept, but the current smartphones are not fast enough to replace a small laptop.

Finally, there is the matter of pricing. Right now, the price of the Lapdock 100 is unknown, but we hope that it will be lower than the previous dock which were priced at $500. From what we have heard on the streets, a $200 price would gain wider acceptance. If not, Motorola has one more solution: open or license its design to 3rd party hardware vendors who can build cheaper lapdocks… [Motorola Lapdock 100]

Motorola’s foray into the world of tablets, like so many others, have not exactly yielded the kind of success that Apple has had with their iPad and its sequel, the iPad 2. Still, that does not mean that Motorola is going to quit from the tablet market. Today, Motorola Solutions announced a spanking new 7? touchscreen rugged tablet that will be powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread – and since there is no Honeycomb inside, you can be sure that this is not going to be a tablet for the masses but rather, one that is deployed for workers in retail stores and warehouses.

The Motorola ET1 will be powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, where it is aided by 8GB of internal storage which can be further expanded should you decide to include a 32GB microSD memory card. Just how tough is this 1.4-pound tablet anyway? It supposedly is said to offer anywhere from 3 to 5 years of life considering its ruggedness, which by far and large is longer lasting than consumer-grade tablets.

Tipped to cost under a grand when purchased in large volumes by businesses, the Motorola ET1's shipments will begin in December. Seems like a pretty expensive proposition for any company that decides to take up a position with this puppy. Ah well, at least it sports a Gorilla Glass display which is 30% thicker than in most consumer tablets, not to mention being position in a recessed position to better withstand drops.

The Motorola Droid RAZR/Motorola Spyder has been talked about quite a bit. Given how the iconic name RAZR name was used back in the day of the feature phone to refer to one of Motorola’s more stylish offerings, it’s natural that there was quite a bit of buzz surrounding the Droid RAZR.

While there has been tons of rumors and speculation surrounding the device, all will be revealed come 18th of October 2011 where Motorola will be holding an event in New York City. While it was not explicitly mentioned that the Motorola Droid RAZR will be revealed/announced, the slogan for the invite which reads, “Faster. Thinner. Smarter. Stronger.” and the teaser video where an image of a razor blade pops up in the 14 second mark, leaves little to the imagination.

If the idea of the RAZR doesn’t really excite you, it has been speculated that perhaps more than just the RAZR will be revealed at the event, such as updates for the Motorola Xoom tablet and possibly its successor? I guess we will have to wait and find out! In the meantime check out the teaser video from Motorola below.

Motorola launches RhoElements

Heard of RhoElements before? Don’t be ashamed or afraid of shaking your head, as we haven’t either. It seems that RhoElements hails from the stables over at Motorola, and is a Web-based application framework that was turned into reality thanks to its acquisition of the cross-platform mobile app development platform known as Rhomobile. Since Motorola acquired Rhomobile earlier this year (July 29, 2011 to be exact), it obviously makes plenty of sense for Motorola to maximize that acquisition.

According to Motorola, they intend to announce even more cross-platform development tools, enterprise integration components and cloud-based services for its channel partners and customers in the coming months. Just what does RhoElements deliver? Well, it offers an HTML5/JavaScript/CSS application framework that will definitely support HTML5 features including app caching, Web storage, and the ability to optimize network utilization, not to mention allow continuous operation even when there is a loss of connection.

This toolkit will most probably appeal towards developers who work in the enterprise environment as well as in Motorola’s “PartnerEmpower” ecosystem. Using RhoElements, businesses are able to develop and deploy Web-based applications on current Motorola Windows Embedded Handheld (formerly known as Windows Mobile) and Windows Embedded Compact (the even older Win-CE) devices. [Press Release]

Don’t we all love family photos? Well, we do know that while Motorola has not been too successful with their Xoom tablet, but that has not stopped to company from coming up with something interesting – the sequel that is obviously known as the Xoom 2. There is yet another leak of the Xoom 2, where it will feature not one – but two Xoom 2 tablets, sporting a closer look at the rear-facing buttons which were making rounds sometime last week.

These buttons do seem to point towards being a power button as well as a volume rocker, where the smaller model between the two will feature the same “Fleming” name that was spotted earlier, not to mention carrying a similar 8.2? screen size. It will be roughly as thick as the iPhone 4, boasting LTE compatibility to boot.

Apart from that, both tablets will also run on Android 3.2 Honeycomb so there is no need to worry about waiting for an operating system update in the meantime upon taking it out from the box. A 5-megapixel HD camera is located at the back to capture photos and videos, but it has been said that both prototypes are “buggy as all hell, with frequent reboots and crashes.” Guess that means it will take a while before the Xoom 2 hits the streets.

We do know that Motorola’s effort at tablets was not really that successful, but at least they did not let the Xoom go under the water just like how HP left the TouchPad to drown shortly after its release. Well, Motorola decided to spruce up their 10.1? tablet with a bunch of edutainment software, calling it the Motorola Xoom Family Edition that was spotted at an electronics store recently.

So far, it looks pretty much like the vanilla Motorola Xoom without any subwoofer that is expected in the rumored Xoom 2 Media Edition, so don’t expect anything out of the ordinary with this apart from your kids playing with your tablet far more often than you would like them to. There is a Kid Mode in the Xoom Family Edition alongside another $40 of software just for kids from Zoodles.

No idea on an official release date or pricing details, but the Motorola Xoom should arrive at store shelves on an official basis pretty soon.

Motorola Atrix 2
A couple of days ago, the Motorola Atrix 2 was spotted in the wild, and now it looks like the phone has surfaced again. This time in the hands of the folks at This Is My Next, who got more than just a screenshot of the device – they got to play around with the phone and even ran some benchmark tests on it too. The phone has been codenamed “Edison” and according to their first impression, “it looks and feels fantastic.” The phone packs more curves than the regular Motorola Android device and looks like it could be from HTC or Samsung.

But one thing that makes the Atrix 2 stand out from other Motorola phones is that it doesn’t use the PenTile pixel arrangement for its display. Folks who dislike Motorola’s usage of PenTile displays won’t have a reason to shy away from the Atrix 2. The phone will run on Android 2.3.5 and won’t be filled with bloatware, with most of the preloaded apps being removable by the user. Fortunately, the Moto Blur UI has been revamped to be more lightweight as well, so that’s a plus point for people who disliked previous versions of Blur.

According to This Is My Next, the phone couldn’t connect to AT&T’s LTE service and only managed HSPA+ instead – which falls in line with previous rumors about the phone not being LTE-capable, but that has yet to be determined. No word on a release time or a price, but AT&T would do well to put the phone on the shelves before Ice Cream Sandwich drops, along with the newer phones running it. Head to the source link for more details about benchmark results and speed tests.
