Android Market and Gmail app blocked in China, again

We know that China isn’t exactly the most Google-friendly country, with Android users in China now and then facing difficulties when attempting to access to the Android Market. This has been an issue that has dated back to 2009 which resulted in alternative app stores from China, which while isn’t exactly what Google had in mind, is better than nothing.

Now it looks like the block is back according to Blocked In China, a website which is able to test what websites are accessible across the five major provinces in China. It appears that the block has been in place for more than 36 hours so far (and still counting), and not just limited to the Android Market, but Android users who rely on the Gmail app on their phones have also reported they are unable to access their Gmail accounts.

There is a myriad of possibilities of why this block has been put into place again recently, with some saying that perhaps China is attempting to protect their upcoming OS, Qiushi, which is Baidu’s answer to Android, who is coincidentally China’s answer to Google (which they have also blocked, along with Facebook and Twitter). We can’t be sure if this is temporary or permanent, but for now it looks like Android users in China will have to turn to alternative app markets.

LG Optimus LTEThe LG Optimus LTE (LG LU6200) seems to be LG’s worst kept secret, as the phone has been surfacing like nobody’s business over the past week. Some new pictures have surfaced of the phone have surfaced again, and this time you get a clearer look at the phone’s hardware. This one sports chrome stylings as opposed to the all black version we’ve seen previously (unless the previous pictures showed black trim due to poor lighting), which makes it look a little iPhone-ish (which could be a good or bad thing depending on your taste). Hopefully it doesn’t draw the wrath of Apple and its lawyers.

Other than the new images, no new details have been revealed. It’s going to be running Android 2.3.5 on a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, it will feature a 4.5? AH-IPS LCD with 720p HD resolution, and will have LTE connectivity. Sounds like a phone we don’t mind having and hopefully it makes its way over to this side of the world.

Motorola Atrix 2
A couple of days ago, the Motorola Atrix 2 was spotted in the wild, and now it looks like the phone has surfaced again. This time in the hands of the folks at This Is My Next, who got more than just a screenshot of the device – they got to play around with the phone and even ran some benchmark tests on it too. The phone has been codenamed “Edison” and according to their first impression, “it looks and feels fantastic.” The phone packs more curves than the regular Motorola Android device and looks like it could be from HTC or Samsung.

But one thing that makes the Atrix 2 stand out from other Motorola phones is that it doesn’t use the PenTile pixel arrangement for its display. Folks who dislike Motorola’s usage of PenTile displays won’t have a reason to shy away from the Atrix 2. The phone will run on Android 2.3.5 and won’t be filled with bloatware, with most of the preloaded apps being removable by the user. Fortunately, the Moto Blur UI has been revamped to be more lightweight as well, so that’s a plus point for people who disliked previous versions of Blur.

According to This Is My Next, the phone couldn’t connect to AT&T’s LTE service and only managed HSPA+ instead – which falls in line with previous rumors about the phone not being LTE-capable, but that has yet to be determined. No word on a release time or a price, but AT&T would do well to put the phone on the shelves before Ice Cream Sandwich drops, along with the newer phones running it. Head to the source link for more details about benchmark results and speed tests.

Alleged iPhone 5 case
Remember the iPhone 5 cases that showed up not too long ago? Well, the folks over at 9to5mac have discovered even more images of the cases through an Italian blog. The site shows off the case with the iPhone 4 placed inside for comparisons, and if it turns out to be the real deal, the iPhone 5 is going to be a larger and thinner device. And what we forgot to mention in the previous post – the case looks like it was built for a phone that tapers off at the end, similar to the iPhone 5 render done by the folks over at This Is My Next, but less radical.

There’s no way to tell if these are the real cases because Apple has been known to leak out wrong information on purpose just to see who’s been leaking what, but if it’s true, fans who’ve been clamoring for a larger device are going to be very pleased. Since the phone is rumored to be announced this month, we’ll soon be able to put all these rumors to rest. Check out macitynet.it and iSpazio.net for more images of this alleged case. What do you think? Is this the iPhone you’ve been waiting for?

3 Things You Can Do Right Now to Get Sales Firing Again - Activities For Sales Managers & Leaders

There is no question that in these economically uncertain times, sales leaders will need to get a whole lot smarter and more shrewd if they are going to keep their existing customers and they are going to need to be a whole lot more crafty if they are to win the slim pickings that are still out there to be had! That being said there are some fundamental sales management strategies that when implemented are guaranteed to generate sales within the next 90 days.

Strategy #1

Your first strategy will seem so simple and so easy that you are bound to say to yourself; "Is that all there is to it?" Please do not be fooled. Whilst the strategy below may seem simple, when done exactly as I have described below, it delivers some amazing results. So don't question, just do! It has been proven that, when effectively applied, the practice of regular one-on-one Sales Performance Coaching is the fastest and most effective vehicle to drive your sales growth. One-on-one Sales Performance Coaching is a powerful, time-tested, behaviour-changing, sales acceleration strategy and is the foundation on which permanent and consistent growth in your business is built. Whilst there are many different processes and skills to be an effective Sales Performance Coach, there are 2 activities that you can apply that would have an immediate impact to your sales drive.

Sit down with each of your salespeople either in person or by phone, ABSOLUTELY NO LESS THAN ONCE A FORTNIGHT. Depending on the state of your sales pipeline, you may need to ramp that up to once a week. Here's exactly all you need to do...

1. IN DEPTH review the week/ fortnight just past. When you are done...

2. IN DEPTH plan the week/ fortnight coming up.

That's it, that's all, that's the lot!

What does IN DEPTH MEAN?

IN DEPTH means just that. As an example, when prospecting for new business opportunities either with existing customers or new prospects, your salespeople must complete some primary due diligence and be able to answer some or all of the following questions before even fronting up or making the sales call. By having answers to the questions below will afford them the best opportunity for success. Your job in coaching them IN DEPTH is to ensure that before they invest their time and your money going to see a prospect, they are extremely well prepared. Imagine if you asked your salespeople some or all of the questions below before a business development call.

"So you are going to see Bob at ABC...."

1. What have you learned about ABC?

2. Who are all the "players"?

3. What does your research tell you about the critical issues that ABC is facing right now?

4. What is the evidence that they are facing these issues?

5. What do you believe the potential impacts of those issues to be? What evidence do you have that they are dealing with this issue?

6. What are their current constraints in solving that issue (in relation to time, people money)?

7. What is our answer for solving the issue?

8. What are the current market trends in their area?

9. What do we know about other companies that operate in the same space as they do?

10. What are ABC's key strategic initiatives?

11. What would their decision constraint criterion be in relation to time, people money?

12. How may we be in a position to help them?

13. What questions do you have prepared to elicit needs?

14. How do you plan on positioning the company and what it is we do?

15. What information should you bring back from your visit, to move this opportunity to the next stage of the sales pathway?

16. What is the objective of the sales call?

That is what I mean by IN DEPTH! Can you imagine just how much better prepared your sales people would be to take advantage of the opportunities out there with this kind of IN DEPTH probing?

Strategy # 2

Look for sales closest to the "bulls-eye!"

Imagine standing front on and facing the circles of a target. Imagine the "bulls-eye!" in the middle is where the money is. The circle just out side the bulls-eye represents your existing customers, let call them A's. They are the ones closest to the money. The next circle represents those customers that have bought from you occasionally, let call them B's. The circle just beyond the B's are your C's and they represent those prospective companies you have targeted but have yet to buy from you. Then outside of your C's we have the D's. These are prospects we have yet to consider.

Once again, as simple as this practice may seem, it is often neglected. When we need more sales, where do we go looking? Out there in D, E, F, and G land. Start looking for business closest to where the money is. Your sales opportunity is to expand your influence within your A and B customer's organizations and earn a higher percentage of their business. According to the 2008 CSO Insights Sales Performance Optimization Report only 33.6% of C.S.O's interviewed were able to farm additional revenues from their existing customer base, and that was last year during a comparatively good market!

Your role as sales manager is to help your salespeople identify where you have previously left money on the table. What are the opportunities with your A, B and C companies? Go work there! Let your Marketing department figure out how to bring the D, E, F, and G prospects in to where the C's, B's and A's reside. If your salespeople can't answer the questions in Strategy 1 with your A's B's and C customers, you have work to do. Have your people renew old relationships. Have them beat the bushes for new opportunities you have yet to capture with your A's, B's and C customers. They live closest to where the money lives. Go get em'!

Strategy # 3

Go to work and re-engineer your current sales process, if you have one. If you don't then get one! The latest research from the CSO Insights' 2008 Sales Performance Optimization Report shows that 'process-centric' sales teams outperform non-process-centric teams for every measurable metric.

Sales team performance and effectiveness has been shown to increase by as much as 40% when sales teams have a clear, proven sales process visible to them. The chances are extremely good that if you currently have 5 salespeople on your team, you most likely have 5 different sales processes going on all at once! What other part of your business runs on multiple different processes? Imagine running your business with half a dozen different accounting processes, or multiple IT or customer service processes? Sounds silly doesn't it? Yet sales teams do so all the time.

Whilst you can reengineer your current selling process, the exercise is not for the faint-hearted. It may be advisable that you bring in professional expertise to ensure the greatest success. You may just be too close to your own current sales methodology to see the gaps or dysfunction.

So there you have it 3 practical ideas you can implement right now to get sales firing again. At the very least run strategy #1 for 90 days. If you will do that, sales will start to flow again.

Writing About Literature - Foiled Again & Again in "The Lord of the Rings"

Whether it's a short story or a novel or something in-between, what's THE most important thing about any story-do you know?

Well, here it is-

By the end, something important has to change---or there's no story

Makes sense, doesn't it? Intuitively, you know that's true, don't you, just as most people do.

In absolutely every published story, what changes at the end always relates to some value stated early on in the story, either by or about the main character. And that early value statement is always a strong evaluation or description concerning a trait, characteristic, goal, problem, or desire related to the main character. That's what I call the old view. The change at the end I call the new view, which is always a reverse of the old view at the beginning.

With that one principle, you can make sense of the major factors in literally every story ever written and published. And you don't have to bring in a bunch of literary devices to prove your point, either.

However, you should know that there's a major difference between a short story and a long story, or novel. In a short story, the major support of the old view/new view relationship is the description of the main character, often having to do with descriptions of their feelings, thoughts, talk, and actions, though a physical description can be powerfully supportive, too.

But in a novel, the major support of the old view/new view relationship in the story is the use of foils. A foil is a character in a story who serves as a contrast to another character. Often, the contrast is with the main character or one of the other primary characters. And the contrast serves to highlight specific traits of the other character that reinforce the old view/new view relationship. Foils are major factors in novels because they take much longer to develop, and short stories just don't have the space or time to develop them.

Now, J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Lord of the Rings, is just bursting at the seams with foils or contrasts between characters, so let's discuss how a few of those foils are used to support the main character and the old view/new view relationship.

First, let's identify the old view strong value statements that are given near the beginning of the story, when Gandalf has a long discussion with Frodo and tells him the true nature of the Ring he has inherited from Bilbo:

Frodo has no pity for Gollum and declares vehemently that Gollum "deserves death."
Frodo strongly disagrees with Gandalf about his having the "strength and heart and wits" to deal with the Ring, and he objects very self-pityingly to being stuck with it.
Frodo wants very much to destroy the Ring, though he'd rather have it destroyed by someone else.
The first two old views get reversed throughout the middle of the story, even before the end: Frodo constantly protects Gollum from others, as he guides Frodo and Sam into Mordor; and Frodo shows fairly consistently that he has the "strength and heart and wits" to deal with Boromir, Gollum, Sam, Faramir, and even Sauron, though he does make a few mistakes.

But when Frodo gets to Mount Doom in Mordor to throw the Ring into the fire and destroy it, he changes his mind and decides to keep the Ring. That is a complete turnaround, a pure reversal of the third old view value statement we identified, above.

Okay, now we're ready to identify contrasting characters, or foils, and show how they relate to the main character and the reversal new view at the end of the story.

Here's a list of six foils or contrasts (out of about forty in the story):

Frodo & Gollum
Frodo & Gandalf
Gandalf & Saruman
Saruman & Denethor
Denethor & Theoden
Faramir & Boromir
Let's examine these contrasts or foils.

Frodo & Gollum - Both are jealous of possessing the ring. But many differences are readily apparent, such as Frodo being concerned for the welfare of others, while Gollum was concerned only for himself and loving only the Ring.

Perhaps the major difference between Frodo and Gollum is that Frodo is intent on destroying the Ring for the sake of all decent beings, while Gollum is intent on obtaining the Ring only for his own delight in possessing it. This difference is crucial for setting up the reversal at Orodruin, the Fire-mountain in Mordor, where Frodo does his turnabout and declares he will not destroy the Ring, which he has been working toward all along.

Fortunately, in another unexpected reversal, Gollum becomes the one to destroy the Ring he loves so much when he accidentally falls into the fires of Mount Doom after stealing the Ring from Frodo.

Frodo & Gandalf - The differences are readily apparent: Frodo is weak and not very wise, while Gandalf is both very powerful and very, very wise. Near the beginning of the story, Frodo asks Gandalf to take the ring because of his superior power and wisdom, but Gandalf declines because he knows that the Ring would quickly overcome him due to his desire to help the weak who are in need, out of pity.

On the other hand, Gandalf points out that weak Frodo has a special kind of hobbit strength to deal with the Ring, such as hobbits generally seem to have, which is being "soft as butter... and yet sometimes as tough as tree-roots... some would resist the Rings far longer than most of the Wise would believe."

However, as Gandalf also points out, the One Ring is so powerful that "in the end it would overcome anyone of mortal race who possessed it. It would possess him." That statement proves prophetic, as in the end the Ring does overpower Frodo and causes his reversal of deciding to keep the Ring for himself and not destroy it.

Gandalf & Saruman - Though both are powerful and wise wizards and both began as good men, Saruman turns evil and desires power over other creatures. We find out why when it is revealed that Saruman has been using one of the palantir seeing-communicating globes, which Sauron used to corrupt Saruman. This contrast between Saruman and Gandalf can easily be extended to contrast with Frodo, who had the powerful One Ring for many years and was not corrupted by it.

Saruman & Denethor - Both are wise and strong, though Denethor is not a wizard. Yet they both used a palantir and both were thereby bent and overcome by association with Sauron's evil mind. Again, the contrast with Frodo's incorruptibility can easily be seen --- until the very end, of course, when he, too, is overcome by evil power.

Denethor & Theoden - Both are rulers of their own nations, and both have become weakened and overcome by the mind of an evil being. In Theoden's case, it was Wormtongue. The difference between Denethor and Theoden was that Theoden accepted help and wise counsel from Gandalf, while Denethor pridefully rejected Gandalf's counsel and help. Frodo, too, accepted Gandalf's help and counsel, mostly, and thereby avoided ensnarement by the enemy --- until at the very last when the power of the Ring finally overcomes him.

Faramir & Boromir - As brothers and as sons of Denethor, Steward of Gondor, both had reason to covet the One Ring entrusted to Frodo as a means to aid their father and their beloved city-nation of Gondor. Because of his pride, Boromir gave in to his lust for the power of the Ring, while Faramir had an even better opportunity of taking it from Frodo, but didn't. As a past student of Gandalf, Faramir was able to resist the lust for power. Like Faramir, Frodo had the benefit of counsel and friendship with Gandalf, which probably was a contributing factor in his resisting the Ring until at the very last, when he succumbed to it.

So the foils or contrasts in the story establish a consistent pattern that allows us to make this generalization, which fits nicely with the old view/new view pattern of the story:

As shown by the foils or contrasts in Tolkien's novel, The Lord of the Rings, the more you associate with evil or lust for power, the more likely it will corrupt and overcome you. Evil power overcame all those who willingly associated with it, even Frodo, though he lasted much longer in resisting it than others who should have been stronger.

Now you have a great thesis statement for your literary essay, as well as lots of support for it --- all courtesy of applying the literary device of foils to the old view/new view pattern in the story.

Will Facebook Become a Phonebook, Again?

Facebook users have been warned for years to be careful about what they post on Facebook. Would potential employers make employment decisions based on your Facebook status postings? Could your profile or photo pages hurt your college or scholarship applications?

The concerns continue mount and even morph.

In January Facebook began allowing access to third parties of Facebook user's phone numbers and other profile information, with user's permission, of course. Apparently not all user's believed they had given permission and this campaign came to a quick halt with Facebook acknowledging that they got "useful feedback that they could make people more clearly aware of when they are granting access to this data."

Facebook has played the "our bad" game more than once with Facebook users' privacy concerns. Still, Facebook's VP for Public Policy Elliot Schrage, who participated in a Q & A session through the New York Times tells Facebook users "If you're not comfortable sharing don't." Many users and privacy advocates still believe Facebook makes it so easy to share, too hard to notice what you're agreeing to and too easy for outsiders to access your Facebook information.

Here's part of what Elliot Schrage had to say in response to questions submitted to the New York Times blog:

"It's clear that despite our efforts, we are not doing a good enough job communicating the changes that we're making. Even worse, our extensive efforts to provide users greater control over what and how they share appear to be too confusing for some of our more than 400 million users. That's not acceptable or sustainable. But it's certainly fixable. You're pointing out things we need to fix."

abycats, New York asked a question that many Facebook users would "like" an answer to.

"Why not simply set everything up for opt-in rather than opt-out? Facebook seems to assume that users generally want all the details of their private lives made public."

What was Schrage's answer?

Everything is opt-in on Facebook. Participating in the service is a choice. We want people to continue to choose Facebook every day. Adding information - uploading photos or posting status updates or "like" a Page - are also all opt-in. Please don't share if you're not comfortable. That said, we certainly will continue to work to improve the ease and access of controls to make more people more comfortable. Your assumption about our assumption is simply incorrect. We don't believe that. We're happy to make the record on that clear."

Do you feel better after hearing this answer?

Before you answer, consider this letter to the U.S. House of Representatives in which Facebook acknowledges a plan to go ahead with the another installment of "allowing" Facebook information to be made available to third parties. Facebook still argues that it is ultimately up to the user to "allow" this but Facebook users have heard this song and dance before.

What if you've left Facebook? Is your information safe?

Well, it depends. Schrage also answered a question about the ways to leave Facebook of which there are two. One is to delete your account. The other is to deactivate your account, which saves all of your information in case you want to easily return in the future. In this case, Facebook will do you a "favor" and save all of your information. If you've left but simply deactivated your account, then you need to continue to follow the news about Facebook future plans to share information with a third party because they could still affect you.

With Tax Day just around the corner and debt collections at an all time high, Michelle Dunn, an debt collection and credit experts expresses concerns about the status updates people share on Facebook:

"Those pictures on your profile or status updates about a new purchase, a raise or your income tax return provide creditors evidence about your ability to pay your debts. For one or two hours a week, you can obtain information that in the past you might have needed to hire a skip tracer to find."

Do these new Facebook plans get you boiling?

Helen A.S. Popkin, a tech writer from MSNBC warns, "Facebook is the slowly warming pot of water and we, my friends, are the frog. By the time we noticed our peeling skin, another hunk of our privacy is long gone."

Popkin add, "This is how Facebook rolls: Strip away a huge chunk of your privacy, cry 'Our bad!' and roll it back when users and/or privacy advocates complain. Then wait awhile, and do whatever it is Facebook planned to do anyway. Voila! Boiled frog."

In a response to a request for information on Facebook's future plans by Yahoo News, Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes emailed the following statement:

"Despite some rumors, there's no way for other websites to access a user's address or phone number from Facebook. For people that may find this option useful in the future, we're considering ways to let them share this information (for example to use an online shopping site without always having to re-type their address). People will always be in control of what Facebook information they share with apps and websites."

So, will you be more cautious about what you're sharing on Facebook now? Will you be taking a second look at what's on your profile page and status updates? And do you wonder who else will?
