Facebook, the social networking giant, has picked up friend.ly, a Formspring-like question & answer site that is built on top of Facebook which enables users to learn more about their friends as well as meet up with new people. This particular site is just a couple of years old, having raised $5 million earlier this year from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Balderton Capital, SoftTechVC, Ron Conway, Naval Ravikant, Michael Birch, and Chamath Palihapitiya amongst others. Apparently, a little bit of tweaking here and there helped it experience sudden growth during the spring, boasting around 300,000 active users on a monthly basis at the moment.

In a friend.ly said in a blog post, is mentioned that the site ”will continue to operate as a separate service,” although the friend.ly team will be training their guns on new projects at Facebook. Not too sure how the entire arrangement is going to work out, but here is Facebook’s take on the matter – “We’re excited to announce that we recently acquired friend.ly, a Silicon Valley startup that created a really compelling way for people to express themselves and meet others through answering questions. We’ve admired the team’s efforts for some time now, and we’re looking forward to having Ed and his colleagues make a big impact on the way millions of people connect and engage with each other on Facebook.”

It has yet to be confirmed that Apple will make an announcement for the iPhone 5 at the upcoming October 4th event which will be held at their headquarters in Cupertino, California, where some people speculate that it could be an iOS 5 announcement first, followed by the iPhone 5 fanfare some 10 days down the road. Either way, if you’re an Apple employee, you’ve got your vacation days blocked out already, so this is merely a case of which comes first – the chicken or the egg.

If Apple prefers to make an announcement of the iOS 5 update, then chances are pretty good that the Facebook for iPad app might also be launched then – something that is long overdue due to negotiations between the two companies. Don’t you find it strange that despite the iPad being released for nearly two years already, there is still no official iPad app?

It is said that the upcoming update to the Facebook for iPhone app will offer “design and speed improvements that mimic the iPad app” – so that should be confirmation enough for those who are wondering whether the Facebook for iPad app is still in unicorn status.

Earlier today, Facebook has announced its Timeline redesign of the user profile page. It’s a design unlike any other in Facebook’s history as it does not focus only on adding more functionality – and clutter. Its goal is to make things more readable, easier to navigate, while at the same time opening the door to more complex and engaging apps/widgets. Instead of describing feature, I will let you watch a video demo, then I will tell you why I think that this is not only a great design, but a great idea.

Timeline

When Timeline was presented on-stage, I was genuinely surprised because this particular update was in effect removing many unused things from the profile page like the navigation on the left side (apps…) and putting important things (friends, photos, like activity) front and center.

Because timeline uses two columns on a PC, it effectively lets users share more things within an efficient layout. From there my friends can scroll down to check older updates, and only the most popular (by comments/likes) updates show up. It’s simple, but it works. I’m very satisfied with the way Facebook’s Graph Rank works.

Apps, front and center

Let’s face it: previous integration of apps were fairly invasive to the user experience in the profile in my opinion. With Timeline, this is going to change. Why? Simply because apps don’t take a permanent spot in the profile page, they are “events” that come and go just like any other update. That’s a really good idea, and I think that Facebook really deserve props for it. Because of that, I suspect that users won’t mind using more apps and for app developers, it will give them many more opportunities to be useful and visible in the world’s largest social network.

Google+ behind, Twitter beyond the horizon

There’s no question that the arrival of Google+ has shaken things up, and that’s great for end-users because both Facebook and Google will continue to fight for your time. I think that being pro-Facebook or pro-Google is somewhat fruitless, I happen to use and enjoy both, but it’s fair to say that today, Facebook has taken the lead, and the initiative, leaving Google+ behind – for now. As for Twitter, it looks as if their path is getting steeper by the day as the service has not really improved in a fundamental way for a long time. In my view, Twitter lacks the engineering and infrastructure muscles  that both Google and Facebook have.

Earlier, I said that I was surprised that Facebook came up with the Timeline design, but I’m glad they did, and it is a very good sign that the company does care about good design, because this should only be the first step in a series of improvements that should go beyond the profile and in all aspects of Facebook.

This works really for everyone: the user gets a better navigation and experience. Facebook gets a good shot at inciting users to invest even more time into Facebook to fill-in the blanks between “date you were born” to 2006 or so. App developers will get much more visibility than before. Everything makes Facebook a stronger social network than before Timeline.

Conclusion

While the new design is sure to make a few people unhappy, my sense is that most users will embrace it, and while Facebook will allow folks to not switch for some time, everyone will eventually have to switch to the new profile page, so as usual it’s a “like it or leave it” proposition that has worked so far for Facebook.

Now, Facebook itself has recognize that they don’t know what is going happen next – it’s up to you to decide. What will you do with Timeline? Will you go back and add data from your childhood, or continue using Facebook as usual?

Do you have a bunch of friends whom you enjoy listening to music with? The company behind Myxer, an online media catalog for mobile devices, has announced a new service targeted at people like you. Called Myxer Social Radio, this service lets users enjoy music with their Facebook friends, engage via video Song Stories, chat with each other in real-time and check out each other’s activity streams. The service will be deeply integrated with Facebook and influenced by a listener’s Facebook friends and social graph.

Myxer will be free for consumers (it will be an ad-supported service), and will be released for iOS and Android as well as on the desktop web. Users hang out together in rooms they create or created by their friends and listen to music that is recommended by Myxer Social Boost. No word on when the service will launch, but you can sign up for more information at the Myxer Social Radio website if you’re interested.

As if Facebook doesn’t already know enough about you, it looks like the service has plans to store your whole life on its service. Facebook unveiled at the f8 developer conference today, a new format for profiles called Timeline. It is designed to keep your friends informed about your recent activities as well as all the things that have happened to you in the past (should you choose to fill it up with information of course). With Facebook Timeline, users can fill up their profiles with photographs and content from the past, in a chronological order.

If you have tons of videos and photographs of yourself when you were younger, you’ll be able to upload them according to year. Friends or people who are allowed access to your profile can easily go through your life history using intuitively designed controls that should make navigating Timelines a breeze. Users can also control the privacy of different sections of the timeline so strangers won’t have access to private events or memories.

Judging by the introduction video and the accompanying webpage, Timeline looks like a great feature that anybody who loves collecting memories will enjoy. Not to mention, the benefits of Facebook being in the cloud means you won’t have to worry about your scrapbooks getting damaged or destroyed if you did your own timeline traditionally. Facebook subscribe buttons have started to surface on Facebook. This is clearly a move that mimics Twitter, and Google+. That makes sense as the feature is actually useful and arguably “necessary” for Facebook if it wants to attract, or retain “star power” in its system. The truth is: most people won’t need or care to be a “broadcaster”, but “influential people” who have a large following in Twitter or Google+ will appreciate this new addition. Of course, their followers will probably welcome this Facebook upgrade.

How it works

Now, users can subscribe to the Facebook feeds of people that they are not “friends” with. However, each user can control if their feed is public or private. To allow subscriptions to your account, visit this page. For general help on this topic, go to this one.

You can enable/disable comments or notifications from this dialog box

If you just want to “follow” someone, check for the “subscribe” button on the top-right section of the person’s profile. Click on it, and select what type of content you want to follow. Overall, I think that this is a convenient way to follow hear what people have to say, without becoming their “friends”.

For example Vic Gundotra, a Google executive, seems popular on Facebook as the system recommended him to me. That’s partly how a very small number of people get a huge following pretty quickly.

It’s a good move from Facebook, even if it has been done under the pressure of Google+. At the moment, it looks like any user can enable Subscriptions to their account, although it may actually only appear in your profile in “a few days”.
