Earlier today, Facebook has announced its Timeline redesign of the user profile page. It’s a design unlike any other in Facebook’s history as it does not focus only on adding more functionality – and clutter. Its goal is to make things more readable, easier to navigate, while at the same time opening the door to more complex and engaging apps/widgets. Instead of describing feature, I will let you watch a video demo, then I will tell you why I think that this is not only a great design, but a great idea.

Timeline

When Timeline was presented on-stage, I was genuinely surprised because this particular update was in effect removing many unused things from the profile page like the navigation on the left side (apps…) and putting important things (friends, photos, like activity) front and center.

Because timeline uses two columns on a PC, it effectively lets users share more things within an efficient layout. From there my friends can scroll down to check older updates, and only the most popular (by comments/likes) updates show up. It’s simple, but it works. I’m very satisfied with the way Facebook’s Graph Rank works.

Apps, front and center

Let’s face it: previous integration of apps were fairly invasive to the user experience in the profile in my opinion. With Timeline, this is going to change. Why? Simply because apps don’t take a permanent spot in the profile page, they are “events” that come and go just like any other update. That’s a really good idea, and I think that Facebook really deserve props for it. Because of that, I suspect that users won’t mind using more apps and for app developers, it will give them many more opportunities to be useful and visible in the world’s largest social network.

Google+ behind, Twitter beyond the horizon

There’s no question that the arrival of Google+ has shaken things up, and that’s great for end-users because both Facebook and Google will continue to fight for your time. I think that being pro-Facebook or pro-Google is somewhat fruitless, I happen to use and enjoy both, but it’s fair to say that today, Facebook has taken the lead, and the initiative, leaving Google+ behind – for now. As for Twitter, it looks as if their path is getting steeper by the day as the service has not really improved in a fundamental way for a long time. In my view, Twitter lacks the engineering and infrastructure muscles  that both Google and Facebook have.

Good design worksThis type of graph, and the man who build them, are the inspiration behind Timeline

Earlier, I said that I was surprised that Facebook came up with the Timeline design, but I’m glad they did, and it is a very good sign that the company does care about good design, because this should only be the first step in a series of improvements that should go beyond the profile and in all aspects of Facebook.

This works really for everyone: the user gets a better navigation and experience. Facebook gets a good shot at inciting users to invest even more time into Facebook to fill-in the blanks between “date you were born” to 2006 or so. App developers will get much more visibility than before. Everything makes Facebook a stronger social network than before Timeline.

Conclusion

While the new design is sure to make a few people unhappy, my sense is that most users will embrace it, and while Facebook will allow folks to not switch for some time, everyone will eventually have to switch to the new profile page, so as usual it’s a “like it or leave it” proposition that has worked so far for Facebook.

Now, Facebook itself has recognize that they don’t know what is going happen next – it’s up to you to decide. What will you do with Timeline? Will you go back and add data from your childhood, or continue using Facebook as usual?

Rupert Murdoch pulls plug on News of the WorldJuly 7, 2011 | 12:10pmincrease text sizedecrease text size

  Rupertmurdoch_g8

Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul at the top of News Corp., has pulled the plug on its popular British newspaper News of the World in the midst of a scandal involving hacked telephone messages. The newspaper, which will print its final edition Sunday, had been operating for 168 years. The announcement from News Corp. stunned publishers, journalists and readers.

Rupert Murdoch's son James Murdoch was the one to make the announcement, which was done in a statement on the News of the World website."The good things the News of the World does, however, have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong. Indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our Company," Murdoch wrote. "The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself."

The scandal has grown from reports that staff of News of the World hacked into voicemail accounts of news subjects in order to aggressively report stories. In one egregious incident, the newspaper is accused of accessing voicemails of Milly Dowler, a missing 13-year-old girl, in 2002. When the voicemail box was full, News of the World staff allegedly deleted messages from frantic family members in order to make room for new messages, an action that led investigators to believe that Dowler was well enough to retrieve her voicemail. Instead, it was later learned that she had been kidnapped and killed.

The scandal has prompted a number of advertisers to withdraw from News of the World, which likely contributed to Thursday's surprising cancellation of the paper. From our report:

The closure will mean the death of a weekly newspaper that has been a part of the British media landscape for more than a century. The News of the World enjoys a circulation of more than 2.5 million, far beyond its closest rival....

Whether the drastic step to shut down the paper will dampen public anger remains to be seen. Many politicians are demanding the resignation of Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International and the editor of the News of the World at the time of the alleged hacking into the teenage kidnap victim.

Brooks is one of Rupert Murdoch's closest confidants and has so far insisted that she will stay on to get to the bottom of the hacking scandal.

About 200 News of the World staffers are expected to lose their jobs.

Pandora Pulls a LinkedIn, As Tech-Starved Investors Gorge on IPO

How starved are investors for high-profile, high-growth Internet companies?

Hungry enough to lift the value of Pandora to just under $4 billion in an hour of trading for the first time on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “P.”

That would be close to $24 a share right now, although the music streaming company — which was once near death — has risen as high as $26 at one point so far this morning.

In any case, its stock opened at $20 a share, well above the $16 pricing yesterday, which was already a far cry from its $9 price when it first announced its IPO.

Insiders unloaded about nine million shares in its initial public offering of the close to 15 million sold to the public, with the company raising $235 million from its six million shares sold.

The high price echoes the recent IPO of LinkedIn, which priced a lot lower than the prices the stock fetched as soon as it hit the market.

Shares on the social business network jumped 100 percent out of the gate a month ago to above $100.

LinkedIn has now settled in at about $75 a share, which is still high.
