Mortal Kombat
A couple of months ago, some of you might have caught the fan made video for a reboot of Mortal Kombat called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. Well, the video was a hit, it gained a lot of attention, and a 9-episode web series (Mortal Kombat: Legacy) was spawned. Now, the director of the first video and the web series, Kevin Tancharoen, has been given the green light by Warner Brothers to turn his version of Mortal Kombat into an official feature length film.

Kevin Tancharoen will be directing an all-new Mortal Kombat movie, with the script being written by his partner, Oren Uziel (the guy who wrote the script for the original video that started it all). At the moment, details are still scarce, with the only thing we know is that the budget for the movie will be under $100 million. No word on whether the original cast will reprise their roles in this movie, or when the movie will be released, but we’ll keep an eye out for it. Mortal Kombat fans all over the world should be pretty happy right now.

YouTube logoHeads up UK YouTube visitors, it looks like YouTube has finally started offering residents in the UK the same service it has offered to those in the US and Canada – movie rental. Released back in May for those in the US, and only just last month in Canada, those living in the UK will have access to about 1,000 movie titles.

It will cost viewers £3.49 to rent a new release, while library titles will only go for £2.49. There are also older titles which will be free to watch, but unfortunately these freebies will be peppered with ads which apparently you can’t skip.

Users will be given a 30 day time frame from which they can start their movie any time. Upon starting the movie, users will have 48 hours to complete it. The bad news is that it appears that not all the movies come in HD format, with most being of DVD quality at 480p. However viewers will have access to extra footage, such as behind the scenes, interviews and etc, although these are already pretty much all over YouTube for free to begin with.

Video games that get translated to movies usually suck (the movies, not the game). Take Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Double Dragon and Mario Bros. for example – the movie versions of those are flops at the box office, so hopefully the upcoming Halo movie will not follow in the footsteps of Doom should it make its way to the silver screens.

According to French site Halo.fr, a press release concerning the book “Halo: Cryptum” by Greg Bear, did mention a film adaptation of the popular game franchise with a probable theaterical release date of 2012. The release reads, “A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.”

With names such as Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks behind this production, chances are pretty good everything is going turn out hunky dory – Spielberg hardly churns out turkeys from what I know. Hopefully the Halo movie will be a reality, right Halo fans?

Dish Blockbuster Movie Pass
Remember earlier today we wrote that Dish Network was going to announce something related to “a stream come true”? At 1PM ET today, Dish Network unveiled what it had in store using Blockbuster’s brand name and it’s called the Blockbuster Movie Pass. Available for Dish Network subscribers, it offers a whole package of DVDs, Blu-ray, and Games in the mail. 3,000 streaming movies for your TV set and unlimited in-store disc exchanges, as well as 20 premium movie channels on your Dish Network box.

The service will be integrated right into the Dish set-top box UI, so there’s no need to replace any hardware. The Blockbuster Movie Pass service will cost existing Dish customers an additional $10 a month and new customers will get one year for free with the $40/month America’s Top 200 package. The service will be launching on October 1st, which is only one week away. As for non-Dish subscribers, something is in the works.

It sure sounds like a great deal – for people who would like to make use of all those features, and it will probably entice some non-Dish subscribers to join the service as well. But I guess we’ll just have to wait to see what Dish has in store for non-Dish subscribers to see how it holds up against the competition. What do you think of it so far?

Move Aside, Netflix! Dish Network To Introduce Online Movie Rentals

dish-network-to-compete-with-netflix.jpg

Some more bad news for Netflix!

Not only have they raised their prices, leaving customers VERY upset, but they've also just recently lost out on their deal with Starz, dropping their stock price by 9% last Friday.

And NOW they have new competition.

The Dish Network is looking into releasing their own movie subscription that will include online streaming as well as mail and in-store rentals, AND on-demand rentals.

Dish also owns Blockbuster, which means they would be getting existing customers as well as possibly picking up the Starz deal that was broken with Netflix.

This is some major competition for Netflix and with so many customers angry at the company for raising their prices, they could very well see another drop in user subscriptions.

Yikes!! We'd think twice about our pricing decisions if we were you, Netflix! Things aren't looking good for you…

Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' won't be a movie after allJuly 20, 2011 |  1:16pmincrease text sizedecrease text size

Stephenking_2003
What will it take to get Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series adapted for screen? Apparently, a pile of gold statuettes, a boffo box office track record and the fans who've bought 30 million copies of the books that make up the series won't be enough.

This week, Universal pulled the plug on an A-list production that was planned to have an innovative release: three feature films and two limited-run TV series. In January, Comcast took over the studio, and the ownership change may have led to a new frugality that didn't mesh with "The Dark Tower," a sprawling sci-fi/western/horror/fantasy epic.

The now-canceled "The Dark Tower" had seriously heavy hitters on its side. Javier Bardem (one Oscar, one SAG Award) was set to star. The project had been cooked up by screenwriter Akiva Goldman (one Oscar, one Golden Globe) and Ron Howard (two Oscars, two DGA Awards), who was slated to direct.

"We worked on it for a year before we even met with [Stephen King]," Howard told Hero Complex in December 2010. "It was all about putting something together that was good enough and getting such an understanding of the material that Stephen King would say, 'Yes, that's the way into this story."

For his part, King was enthusiastic. In a statement, he said, "I've been waiting for the right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV viewers around the world. Ron, Akiva, Brian [Grazer] along with Universal and NBC have a deep interest and passion for 'The Dark Tower' series and I know that will translate into an intriguing series of films and TV shows that respect the origins and the characters in 'The Dark Tower' that fans have come to love."

King's "The Dark Tower" series began in 1982 with "The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger" and includes six other novels, totaling 3,795 pages. In addition to the 30 million copies the books have sold, Marvel Comics has released a number of related graphic novels, and there is an online game and a published concordance about the Dark Tower world.

King has announced that the eighth book in the series, "The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole" is on its way. Will the cancellation of the screen adaptations of the series mean any changes in the planned 2012 publication date?

And is there really no one in Hollywood who can keep the screen version of "The Dark Tower" alive?

A new 'Hunger Games' movie poster! OMG!July 20, 2011 |  2:14pmincrease text sizedecrease text size

Some people will be very excited about this. Other people will see an embedded flash file and think, huh, well, I suppose it's better than an ani-gif.

The movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young adult series "The Hunger Games" -- the trilogy includes "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay" -- is much anticipated. Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence will portray the heroine, Katniss, who must be a young warrior in a post-apocalyptic America.

The film version of "The Hunger Games" will not coming to the screen for 247 more days, but whoever is behind the promotion manages to sends out an average of a news release a week, if not more, to build excitement.

For some people, this works. For other people, it's caused a certain amount of "Hunger Games" fatigue.

Today's news release was about a poster, or rather, a "poster," which is actually a screen image with moving flames in a rectangle shaped that kind of resembles a poster. OMG.
