When you think solar power, you probably think that it’s only good for use in the day, and generally this is true especially when it comes to things like solar powered chargers for phones or laptops and etc. Not content with just its use for the day, a solar energy power plant in Spain not only uses the power of the sun to keep it working in the day, but manages to keep it going all through the night as well.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because this isn’t exactly groundbreaking as there are actually several solar plants in the world that do this, but the one built in Spain, dubbed the Gemasolar, is apparently the only one in world that has the capability of working non-stop for 24 hours. This is accomplished by redirecting the heat from the sun and storing it in a tank. In order to keep the plant going 24 hours, the engineers used molten salt instead of oil to product pressurized steam in the turbine, which is apparently more efficient.

However, before you get too excited at the possibilities, while the solar energy plant is capable of working through the night, it is unable to generate maximum capacity, but then again with the majority of people asleep at night, power consumption probably isn’t what it is during the day either. Despite that, the designers of the plant are estimating that its capacity at night should be able to reach 70% by 2012.

OK, so it might be a bit of stretch to take the words from Star Wars III to depict the Huawei Honor smartphone as (still) Chancellor Palpatine squared off with Jedi Master Mace Windu, delivering the killing blow of Force Lighting after Windu had an amputation procedure performed by Anakin Skywalker, but I could not help myself since its 1,900mAh battery is its main selling point.

Huawei claims up to 3 days of use on a single charge, making it boast the longest battery life among smartphones that fall under the 4? display category. Of course, the context in which a phone is used plays a huge role in determining the battery life, but I do hope to get hold of a unit to find out for myself. Hardware-wise, the Huawei Honor comes with a 1.4GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera at the back that does HD video recording as well, a 2-megapixel camera up front, all crammed into a body that is 10.9mm thin while tipping the scales at 140 grams.

It will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity thrown into the mix, accompanied by 512MB RAM, 4GB ROM, a microSD memory card slot, a micro USB 2.0 port, 3G support, and run on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. No idea on pricing just yet , but expect it to come in just one color ala Ford Model T – as it arrives in China, Russia and the Middle East at the end of this year.

Subliminal Messages in Sales Training Can Multiply the Power of Your Existing Sales Skills

Subliminal messages are a great sales training tool when used in addition to traditional and practical training techniques. With subliminal training you can effortlessly stimulate your mind and multiply the power of your sales techniques. Imagine putting on a set of headphones, listening to a CD or MP3 subliminal messaging track, and having your unconscious take in directly targeted subliminal messages. No reading through hundreds of pages of a sales training book, and no complicated selling techniques to remember. This is an effortless way to learn and make the best use of your time.

I've used subliminal messages when coaching sales people that had problems in other areas of their life that were affecting their performance at work. I've seen subliminal training used to overcome obstacles such as lack of confidence, financial problems, and to make changes to personal appearance and physical well being. There are many things that can affect our results at work, such as fears, phobias, or irrational beliefs. Once these negatives have been overcome we can focus and use our resources to move forward and become successful in a sales role. Subliminal messages work in the same way as hypnosis.  They bypasses your conscious logical mind and act on your unconscious mind. This is why subliminal messaging is so effective at helping you change patterns of  behaviour. Your logical mind is a function you start to develop around the age of five or six. This is why you can suggest almost anything to a child and they will accept it as truth. When we are younger we are much more susceptible to suggestion and you don't need hypnosis or subliminal messaging to create self beliefs in a child.

When we are adults our logical mind does not let us accept all the information presented to us. By going around the conscious mind you can make major changes to your self beliefs, patterns of thinking, and physical behavior. These changes would be very difficult if using conscious learning techniques. By accessing your subconscious mind you can solve difficult problems or issues much more quickly and directly. Hypnosis gains access to your subconscious mind by sending you into a trance. And this is where the difference between subliminal messaging and hypnosis comes in. Subliminal messaging doesn't send you into a trance. You won't feel drowsy, or need to take a time out for an hour.  This means that you can use subliminal cds and mp3s while you work, study, or go about your daily activities. I've seen many top sales performers using subliminal training while at the gym. This is a great sales training technique because the exercise, and the surroundings, distracts your conscious mind and the subliminal messages go directly into your subconscious. It is also a great way to save time as you are getting physical training and mental sales training in the same space of time.

Having managed and trained sales people for many years it is my opinion that using subliminal messages has no negatives and a lot of potential positives. The worst that can happen is that the training has no effect. The potential positives are: increased sales results using an effortless sales training tool. You make changes that create a positive mental attitude, and you increase sales and earn more money,

The Redeeming and Liberating Power of Literature - Part 2

At the end of Part 1, I said good literature is art with minimum trickery in terms of its core meaning and human significance.

Let me give an example to compare and contrast.

Standup comedy, for example, is notorious for completely avoiding that issue of honesty. Although we always laugh at what we instinctively recognize to be very true and thus appreciate the comedian for giving voice to what we usually do not have the courage to say out aloud in the open, in terms of its overall intention, standup comedy seeks to grab us, make us laugh, and then leave us exhausted with that one-two punch. It is powerful because it always catches us off-guard but there is no healing, no redemption in its aftermath. Like the morning of a loveless one night stand, it leaves us emptier than before.

Craig Ferguson, a standup talk-show host that I admire and laugh with, revealed the weak-underbelly of comedy for comedy's sake one unforgettable night in February 2007 by refusing to make Britney Spears the butt of his jokes.

"She's still a baby who needs help for god's sake" was his explanation for not heaping up on a young woman in the midst of a serious breakdown; someone who clearly needs immediate care and attention instead of sharp humiliating jokes at her expense.

At that point he rose above the muck of heartless standup and elevated both himself and his art to a redeeming, heads-up orbit of maturity. At that level he helped us free ourselves from all the vicious mixture of love-and-hate that we harbor towards all celebrities. Ferguson on that unforgettable night used his comedy to see us inside our worst mirrors and thus helped us to heal our incessant need for laughter-as-tranquilizer, even if it demeans another human being crying for help.

In such rare instances, even comedy of course can become as liberating as good literature. But those moments are unfortunately very rare in standup. We usually end up tricked into a belly full of laughter by a master trickster and we howl like a tractor trailer passing over a road kill. Who cares what happens to the poor sucker who dared to stand in front of the laughter train?! Romans had their gladiators. We have our standups.

The Power of Father-Child Relationships Depicted in African American Literature

Recently, I moderated a black men's seminar at Zahra's bookstore in Inglewood, California. The group present consisted of about 20 men and 7 women. Our guest author was Ken Mask, M.D., from New Orleans, Louisiana. (Titles: Murder on the Butt, Luke Jacobs, PI, City Park Murder.)

During the two hours, we covered diverse subjects such as what men really feel about being fatherless, how to recognize the silent cries of men, what single women need to know when rearing a male child, men's fear of commitment, and the behavior of broken men. However, the main topic we covered was the confidence a male child acquires from his father.

Although women were present in the seminar, their concerns were why men had such a fear of commitment. What we concluded, though, was that this fear of commitment often could be traced back to the lack of a strong father figure in their lives.

Clearly, the better modeling men have of responsible fatherhood, the better fathers they can become.

From the disclosures made during the seminar, there is definitely a need for black men to have an example of how powerful a good father's influence can be.

In an ideal world we would have all grown up with strong fathers in spite of racism, unemployment, alcoholism, prison and the myriad things which negatively impact Black men. But unfortunately, we don't live in the ideal world.

So I'm a strong believer in bibliotherapy--using books as a way of healing our souls.

Often, for Black people, these examples can be found in African American literature.

Here is a list of books, which deal with the confidence a male (or female) child acquires from a father. These are just a few of the books. You can compile your own list.

Sweet Summer, Growing Up With and Without My Dad by Bebe Moore Campbell. This book details how the late Bebe Moore Campbell would go visit her divorced father in the summer while she was growing up. Although he was in a wheel chair, he stood tall in teaching her the gentle lessons of womanhood.

Sounder by William H. Armstrong. Even though the sharecropping father is sent away to prison, he had a strong presence in the book and he definitely influenced his son to grow up as a man.

In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie Logan and her three brothers come to understand why the land they own means so much to their Papa. "Look out there, Cassie girl. All that belongs to you. You ain't never had to live on nobody's place but your own and long as I live and the family survives, you'll never have to. That's important. You may not understand that now but one day you will. Then you'll see."

In the classic, Roots, by Alex Haley, the fathers in this family saga were strong, inspite of captivity, slavery, Jim Crow, and segregation. Who can ever forget the handing down of the story of the "Old African" from generation to generation?

In All in the Family, anthology, Janice Sims, Melanie Schuster, Maxine Thompson, the father, Mr. Johnson, is a modern day farmer, and a good father to his four daughters, which helps them pick good mates.

Murder on the Butt, Luke Jacobs, PI, City Park Murder, Luke Jacob, PI, City Park Murder, Ken Mask, M.D. As a private Investigator, the main character, Luke Jacob always reflects back to what his late police father would have done.

In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry. Who can ever forget the pride reflected in the son's face when his father, Walter, said, "We are very proud, and this is my son, who makes the sixth generation of our family in this country..." Also, the fact that his father stood up, refused to sell back the house to the bigoted neighbors, and did the right thing.

After all, isn't that what African American literature is about? Showing us a way to live in the world with dignity, in spite of racism, bigotry and poverty?

Back to the seminar, at the end of the forum, these are some of the solutions we came up with for fathers.

1. Include God in your life as the head of your family.

2. Turn off the TV and the Internet and communicate with your children.

3. Take time to engage in old-fashioned pastimes such as bible studies, fishing, camping, bowling.

4. Take time to hug your children.

5. Tell your children you love them.

As for fathers who have been absent in your children's lives, make time to become involved with your children, even if they are now adults. It is never too late.

Literature and Women: The Power of Words

Much has been written about women and women's issues throughout the ages - by women themselves, and about women by men. Books and poems about women's mastery and mystery, their beauty and perceived lack of it, the ties that bind them to good men, the lies that bind them to bad men. Millions of words have been written about women's tight-knit bonds with other women, their co-dependency on men, the wondrous bliss and fulfillment of being a new mother. Writers throughout the ages have turned ordinary women into legends, pariahs, or superheroes being equally vilified, vindicated, or honored in their society for their perceived weakness, overcoming the odds, or simply because they are beautiful.

Significant works of literature by women like Germaine Greer, who authored a ground-breaking and controversial book called The Female Eunuch in 1970, echo still within the hearts, minds, and sexuality of many women over fifty. This one work was so compelling and controversial that the women of the time were confronted with an 'in your face' force that propelled them beyond any place they otherwise would have more comfortably inhabited. Some of them embraced the message and passed the passion down to their daughters. Anti-feminist critics accused Greer of being a bitter man-hater. Some feminists accused her of catering to men and castigating women for the sexual disabilities of society.

Many women did indeed rise to the challenge of that rallying cry way back then to break free, to empower themselves! It was called 'women's lib' in those days. But, here we are more than half way through the first decade of the 21st century and women have a considerable journey ahead. Still women must persist and strive for that peaceful place where their accomplishments are recognized and ultimately their needs are met - where their souls, spirit, and value as human beings are defined by themselves and no one else.

Today, with the women's liberation movement almost entirely demobilized, women's lives are actually getting harder. Social services are de-funded, wages and working conditions are eroded, and women once again are working round the clock, on the job and at home. Ironically, Greer's most recent book, The Whole Woman, documents this new turn and angrily refutes the claim of some feminists that women have achieved their liberation. She states: "Fake equality is leading women into double jeopardy. The rhetoric of equality is being used in the name of political correctness to mask the hammering that women are taking. When The Female Eunuch was written our daughters were not cutting or starving themselves. On every side speechless women endure endless hardship, grief and pain, in a world system that creates billions of losers for every handful of winners. It's time to get angry again." Books such as this, whether you agree with their message or not, will keep track and gauge women's progress.

Women writers have given us bibles, road maps to navigate the passages of time, how to turn roadblocks and detours into new roads - they have told us how to avoid crashing. But, men too, often with great sensitivity and understanding of their subject, write perfectly eloquent treatise ode to women. Thus many poets and authors have played a key role in advancing the society of women. Others, sometimes unintentionally, have aided women's regression. Others still, have elevated women to goddess and queen who rules all, their mellifluous poems and stories an unabashed celebration of WOMAN. Awestruck they have created for women's hungry hearts and minds, female characters who like birds on the wing, are fluid, magical, flash-dancing bolts of warm liquid lightening whose very existence makes man's world go 'round. And writers from every age have felt compelled to chronicle that sparkling, and ever so scary dance of love and desire, that men and women either wickedly or heartfelt, engage in every day of our lives.

Literature is the mirror that reflects our society. It is unforgiving and completely accurate. Books and poetry have given us an in-depth exploration of women and their journey, how they fit into the complex tapestry of time - how far they have come, and where they need to travel next. The written word teaches us that mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and life partners make rich contributions to their loved ones and to the world. Through reading, we sense their power and become acutely aware of the elegance they possess - even beyond their own imaginings.

Thousands of women throughout the world overcome adversity every day, rise above their circumstances to create beauty, share their boundless love, and lead the way for others. Literature records it all. The essence of women resonates through the poetry and stories of women themselves and those who love and appreciate them. Ample proof that courage, strength, perseverance, and vision can and do change laws, scare the hell out of the powers that be, give children successful role models, and ultimately make for a better world. Read the books, welcome poetry into your soul, write your own story! Because sometimes, putting it in writing is the only voice we have that can really be heard.

The Redeeming and Liberating Power of Literature - Part 1

True, serious, honest literature can liberate us from our chains and bonds and redeem the dignity and wholeness of a life that gets squandered in so many shopping trips to the mall, and so many idle days and nights spent in meaningless work and watching all that drivel on the tube.

A definition is in order. I do not want to mean that "only" "true literature" is art. No. Art is an infinite field of creation and expression. But I believe not all art liberates. Some actually thicken the chains that tie us to our fears and illusions. Some art liberates us from the bonds that keep us as dwarfs while good literature gives us the wings that we never suspected we had.

Is true literature entertainment? Of course it is but it is not ONLY entertainment. That's why the Die Hard franchise is great entertainment but it's not liberating art.

Is true literature an escape hatch through which we can fly away from the daily grind? Yes it is, but it is not ONLY an escape. That's why YouTube is great fun and escape but it's not liberating art.

What I have in mind are the novels and story books written by famous award-winning authors like John Irving, Richard Ford, Alice Munro, Billy Collins, and countless other writers and poets.

How does (what I call) "true literature" do that? Let me try to count the ways.

First of all, good literature is honest literature. It is art with minimum trickery in terms of (not the format and style but) its core meaning and human significance.

The Power of StumbleUpon

I love StumbleUpon and the StumbleUpon Shark. I use it at work (BigOak Stumble Account) and at home. I use it sparingly for any SEO support as the traffic converts poorly in any scenario and the links are not followed by the search engines. But sometimes the large amounts of traffic it can bring will probably be a good thing, if only for branding purposes, for your site. So today my jaw dropped when I gave a page a thumbs up and saw how many visitors it had from StumbleUpon. The page had 2.6 million viewers. To my knowledge that is the largest number of viewers I have seen for a StumbleUpon page. Please feel free to add any you have come across that are larger than this.

Even more amazing is the fact that this traffic seems to be consistent as this site as submitted back in 2007 and I stumbled it today (6/24/2010).
