Acne PwnerIf you have an app on your smartphone that supposedly cures your skin problems, we’ve got some bad news for you: you’ve been duped. The FTC has recently fined two developers for creating “acne cure” apps for Android and iOS. Called “AcneApp” and “Acne Pwner”, these apps claimed to be able to cure your acne by using blue and red light therapy.

The two separate apps that were available on the Android Market and Apple App Store have since been pulled and their developers fined. AcnePwner, which was on sale for $0.99 on the Android Market was downloaded approximately 3,300 times, and the developer was fined $1,700. AcneApp was on sale at the Apple App Store for $1.99 had approximately 11,600 downloads, and its developer fined $14,294. Ouch. I guess that’s what you get for tricking people into believe your lies – and charging them for it.

Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata: “Absolutely not” to smartphone games

Whether handheld gaming console companies like Nintendo or Sony want to admit it or not, smartphones and tablets are starting to become new platforms for playing games. Games such as Infinity Blade and Rage are good examples of how smartphone/tablet games can feature rich and complex graphics as well, although in terms of depth of gameplay, handheld consoles still take the cake on that one. With games like Angry Birds selling hundreds of million, it’s not surprising that Nintendo investors were pressuring the company to start creating games for smartphones and tablets.Whatever their reasoning (we’ll never know), Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata said in an interview with Nikkei said: “This is absolutely not under consideration.”

“If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo. Having a hardware development team in-house is a major strength. It’s the duty of management to make use of those strengths. It’s probably the correct decision in the sense that the moment we started to release games on smartphones we’d make profits. However, I believe my responsibility is not to short term profits, but to Nintendo’s mid and long term competitive strength.”

While there is without doubt that there are still legions of handheld console fans out there, sales on the Nintendo 3DS have not be favorable, and it even caused Nintendo to start slashing prices drastically in order to “create momentum for the Nintendo 3DS and accelerate its market penetration toward the year-end sales season.” This is a stance that’s probably familiar to Nokia pre-Windows Phone 7, so here’s hoping that Nintendo won’t be heading down that path.

Fusion Garage’s Grid 4 smartphone spotted at the FCC

Back in August, we reported on Fusion Garage’s Grid 4 smartphone along with the Grid 10 tablet. The phone was slated for a release in Q4 this year, but it was recently spotted at the FCC, which seems to suggest that perhaps we may not have to wait that long before we are able to get our hands on the device.

For those who may have forgotten about the device, it will be running on the GridOS platform, which is a variation of the Android platform which means you will be able to run your Android apps on it just fine. It will also sport a 4” 480×800 display, a 1GHz Qualcomm processor under the hood, 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It will also come with a 5MP camera that is capable of recording 720p video, a 0.3MP front-facing camera and a microSD card slot for memory expansion.

The FCC filing also revealed a user manual which basically outlined what we should be able to expect from the Grid 4 smartphone. It seems that it will feature full integration with email, Facebook and Twitter, and users will be able to import data from their Yahoo or Google accounts. It will also feature what Fusion Garage is calling the “TaoBar”, which apparently is able to offer suggestions apart from displaying notifications and events. For example if you were listening to a song, the TaoBar could suggest an artist of similar genre and such.

At the moment it does sound like it could be a rather promising device, but we will have to wait for it to be released before we can come to a better conclusion. Anyone excited at the prospect of getting their hands on Fusion Garage’s Grid 4?

Samsung Overtakes Apple in Smartphone Sales [Europe]

Samsung Overtakes Apple in Smartphone Sales [Europe] | Ubergizmo window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.init({ appId : '139683546053659', status : true, // check login status cookie : true, // enable cookies to allow the server to access the session xfbml : true // parse XFBML }); }; (function() { var e = document.createElement('script'); e.src = document.location.protocol + '//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js'; e.async = true; document.getElementById('fb-root').appendChild(e); }()); Network:Ubergizmo English, French, SpanishUberphones Subscribe to RSS Ubergizmo ReviewsMobileGamingAndroidAppleComputersGadgetsConceptsPhoto/VideoEvents |  Jobs Home > CellPhones > Samsung Overtakes Apple in Smartphone Sales [Europe] Samsung Overtakes Apple in Smartphone Sales [Europe] Hubert Nguyen 09/15/2011 17:16 PDT

Galaxy-S2-iphone-4

According to IDC, Samsung has surpassed Apple in European smartphone sales by shipping 4.8 Million units, compared to Apple’s 4.6M units. Samsung had a strong momentum before, but clearly, the Samsung Galaxy S2 should get the credit for this (read our Samsung Galaxy S2 review). HTC stands at the third spot, and you can easily understand why every player is fighting with the gloves off: Apple sues Samsung, and HTC countersuing Apple while Google is arming HTC with patents. It is a bit surprising that Samsung has overtaken Apple so quickly. On the other hand, only Samsung, offers phones that easily go head to head with Apple in them of thinness, image quality and photography capabilities. Of course, there are still big differences between the two designs, especially in terms of build quality and material. Apple stays entrenched in the high-end manufacturing with glass and aluminum, while Samsung sticks to lighter materials like plastic.

Beyond the Samsung/Apple fight, Android has indeed been the number one in terms of overall market share, and there is probably nothing that Apple can do as the iPhone 5 is unlikely to change the trend. The loser in the story? Nokia. Despite a historical strength in that Market, Nokia’s market share is quickly eroding – now the jump to Windows Phone 7 is more than ever a “do-or-die” for the company.
