Verizon’s Home Monitoring and Controls, a complete Connected Home solution, is now a product. The service was announced last year and has been tested by a limited number of users in the first half of 2011. Now, it is becoming a real product that anyone can sign-up for and it starts at $9.99/mo.

What can you do with it?

The system can work with a number of sensor (webcam, temperature) and home accessories (lights, electronic door lock, heater controller…), but it is possible to watch your home through a webcam, turn lights on and off, control the temperature, and even open/lock doors. Of course, to do that you need to equip your home with  a gateway device, which is the “main box” that controls everything, and with modules (light switch…) that interface with your appliances. If you use Verizon’s FiOS television service, it is also possible to control your TV.How do you get started?

Verizon has a few kits which are based on popular usage models: Home Monitoring and Control, Home Monitoring and Energy Control. The most expensive kit costs $220, while the cheaper one stands at $70. You can find more information on Verizon’s site.

How does it work?

Basically, you would use a smartphone to control the various smart elements of your house, via the gateway device. I’m not sure if a Verizon phone is required, but it seems like it should work with an smartphone. There’s also a PC version if you prefer doing all that from a computer.

Similar solutions exist, but Verizon is trying to make the process (install and billing) easier as it is integrated to other services that you may already have (FiOS or smartphone).  What do you think? Would you rather build this with 3rd party hardware and software, or do you think that going with Verizon would be easier? Also, would you pay $10/mo for this service?

Ah, the rather elusive Samsung Stratosphere. I guess we’re something like journalists for National Geographic in our efforts to hunt down the latest and greatest news, save for the fact that we’re dealing with the world of tech instead of animals and wildlife. Well, we’ve already seen the leaked specifications for the Samsung Stratosphere, not to mention having its manual sneak out as well, so what better way to commemorate the smartphone than to announce the Samsung Stratosphere officially from Verizon Wireless now?

Originally slated for a rollout in September 8 last month, I guess the adage “better late than never” holds true here. The Samsung Stratosphere is similar in style and specifications to the Epic 4G, although users will be able to enjoy the speeds that Verzon’s 4G LTE network offers. Just in case you’ve forgotten what the Samsung Stratosphere packs, it will feature a 4? Super AMOLED display at 480 × 800 resolution, a 5-megapixel rear camera with auto focus and flash, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a 1GHz processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread as the operating system of choice.

The asking price? $149.99 with a new 2-year contract which frankly, ain’t too bad an offer at all.

Verizon Wireless is up next in line to officially announce the iPhone 4S right after Sprint, and of course the terms and conditions would be pretty much the same – I guess it really boils down to which carrier you would like to place your hard earned dollars with, where the 8GB iPhone 4S starts from $99.99 onwards, going all the way to $399 for the 64GB model – all with a 2-year contract, of course.

Those who are interested will be able to place a pre-order for the iPhone 4S online from this Friday onwards, which is October the 7th, where said smartphone will arrive a week after that in front of your doorsteps. Of course, what good is the iPhone 4S if it does not come with its own voice and data plan?

You can opt for the $39.99 voice plan for 450 minutes and a data plan from $30 for 2GB monthly onwards, and needless to say, anything more than that would mean having to fork out even more moolah. [Press Release]

Despite stealing the iPhone exclusivity away from AT&T earlier this year, it looks like the Big Red carrier still has a high regard for Android devices. It has been reported that Verizon has sided with Samsung to fight against Apple. Just in case you haven’t been keeping abreast of what’s been going on – Apple has sued Samsung for allegedly copying the design of the iPhone and iPad, and wants to prevent the sale of certain Samsung devices here in the US.

Verizon has filed the necessary paperwork to the US District Court for the Northern District of California to ask for the denial of Apple’s injunction against US Samsung devices. Seeing how Verizon makes money selling a number of Samsung devices, the carrier’s revenue would be affected if Apple’s injunction goes through. Less devices would mean less choices, unhappy consumers, lost customers, and no growth. Seeing how it’s a nationwide ban – other carriers would be affected as well.

Props to Verizon for speaking up against this silly patent war, and hopefully the court makes the right decision. Since Verizon has taken the first stand, do you think the other carriers will stand up and intervene as well?
