Wall art offers retro gaming goodness

There is just this beauty concerning art – it is so subjective and speaks differently to everyone, that just about anyone is able to come up with their own interpretation of it which might not be what someone else is able to appreciate. Well, you know the saying – all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so here is a piece of wall art that delivers retro gaming goodness to the masses.

Basically, it is meant to be hung around the reception area so that your customers are able to enjoy a bunch of retro games while they wait for their appointment to commence. Buttons located on the right have been labeled as Start and Jump, but to keep in line with old school gaming’s sake, why not call them A and B? They’re larger than normal arcade buttons, while the display itself will be pleasing to any eye by being a Samsung widescreen computer monitor.

Arduino is responsible to control digitized retro LCD games, while a Python script will translate what happens to the keypresses on a computer. Seems to be a cool contraption to have in any lobby for sure.

Retro looking iPhone/iPod charging dock with Bluetooth headset

If you like the idea of marrying new technology with the old, perhaps this iPhone/iPod dock charger with a Bluetooth headset shaped in the style of a retro phone might appeal to you. As you can see from the photo above, the dock has been crafted in such a way that it appears to be rather vintage in design, and with the app running on the iPhone in the background, it looks like you could even make calls the old fashioned way by spinning the dial.

The seller has only one set available at the moment, but it seems that he is up for taking orders. It has been crafted by hand and will be available in a variety of woods, and the Bluetooth headset will also be available in the coiled wire model and is said to be capable to receiving calls up to 30 feet away. If you’re interested in checking out more photos or want more information, head on down to the seller’s etsy page. For those interested in purchasing the dock, it will set you back $72 + $15 for shipping.

Annpatchett
What do you do when you write another bestselling novel? Open an independent bookstore -- if you're Ann Patchett, that is.

Sure, the 400 or so Borders bookstores around the country are closing. Yes, you can now see ads for the Kindle e-reader on TV. And when it comes to technology and books, both readers and publishers are saying e-books, e-books, e-books. Yet Patchett, whose latest book, "State of Wonder," is in its fifth week at the top of The Times' bestseller list, wasn't worried about any of that when she decided to open a bookstore in Nashville. The city, which has a population of about 1.5 million, has used bookstores but no first-run bookstore selling new books. The Associated Press reports:

"I see this as a gift to the city," Patchett says. "I see this as a charitable contribution ... not as an investment, not as a smart business move, but really as somebody who loves Nashville and somebody who doesn't want to live in a city without a bookstore."...

During her recent book tour, Patchett scoped ideas she could incorporate into her own store. [Independent bookstore owner Daniel] Goldin was a beacon in the fog, helping her with the fine details of putting together a store from scratch. He talked about the importance of flooring bids and payroll taxes. But he also talked about the importance of making sure his store is a cornerstone for the community.

Patchett will join a growing community of authors who own bookstores. Louise Erdrich owns Birchbark Books, focused on Native American intellectual culture, in Minneapolis. Also in Minnesota, Garrison Keillor's Common Goods Books has been selling books in St. Paul since 2006. Larry McMurtry owns Booked Up, an antiquarian bookstore in Archer, Texas. Jonathan Lethem is a co-owner of Red Gap Books, a used bookstore in Maine.

Patchett's bookstore, to be named Parnassus Books, is set to open before Christmas.
