I know, Halloween is as good as two months away considering we’re just easing into September, but that does not mean you cannot start preparing early for a Halloween party, right? For those who feel that they’re pretty handy with electronics and cobbling stuff together with your hands, perhaps I might interest you in dressing up as a techno Viking at the end of October? Garrett at MaceTech came up with this cool looking LED Viking Helmet that relied on fiber optics to get the job done, and I must say that the final product is extremely impressive.

Of course, looking for the materials required can be quite a challenge, but Garrett managed to get together all the bits and pieces required, tracking down cheap (and in bulk) fiber optic toy wands, cutting them apart so that he can “harvest” the fiber bundles within. These fibers were then glued into a laser cut plastic assembly, and paired with a handful of OctoBrite CYANEA modules which Garrett already had.

An Arduino Pro Mini is used to control the baddest helmet on the block, while an electret mic and graphic equalizer chip will see action when handling audio input and audio filtering processes. I wonder if new classes in a RPG campaign would include a techno Viking who wanders around, hoping for a way to recharge his helmet after the last battle with a dragon.

Great Group Halloween Costume Ideas - Take Your Cue From Movies and Literature

If you are going mob handed to a party then you may want to coordinate your costumes into one theme. This will have a massive impact on other party goers when you arrive. Group costumes are also useful if you are going to a large venue so that you can spot each other in the crowd. Whatever your motivation, here are some great group Halloween costume ideas.

I've seen this many times before but it still looks great. Go as Alex and his Droogs from a Clockwork Orange. This film version of the novel was voluntarily withdrawn from public screening in Britain by director Stanley Kubrick, for fear that people would imitate it. He was probably more concerned with the violent aspect of it but today people love to dress up as Droogs.

A Droog costume is relatively simple. A white shirt and pants, Doc Martens boots and a bowler hat.  You can really get into the role by drinking milk and using some of the lingo but no tolchocking please.

In fact, you can get many great group Halloween costume ideas from films and literature.

How about D'Artagnan and the three Musketeers ? These are similarly themed costumes but each person can still have their own identity. A typical Musketeer costume involves a white puffy shirt, patterned tunic, pirate hat and a sword.

Robin Hood costumes would also work. Add Maid Marion and Friar Tuck and you have a few different costumes to go with Robin's Men in tights look.

TV shows and Super hero characters can also make for a good group theme. I think going as the trailer park boys would be a great idea. And it wouldn't be too hard to do either. If you like rum and coke then Julian is your man, Bubbles needs the big glasses and a few cheeseburgers for Randy.

If you really want to go for it then dress as the Munsters. Frankenstein, Vampira, Dracula and werewolf costumes will be needed for this group but you'll make a great impression at any Halloween party.

If you fancy being a musketeer this Halloween then simply click Renaissance knight costume, or maybe you want to be a knave from Robin Hood's time. Check out the full range of medieval knight costumes now.

Look to Literature for Your Halloween Costume Ideas

Literature provides a plethora of Halloween costume Ideas.

Literature parallels history in many cases, especially the works of the old masters, Shakespeare, Molire, Dickens. And there is a wealth of Halloween costume ideas within these works of art. And naming rights are not an issue. Naming rights, as in the characters already have names, such as Uriah Heep. I just love that name.

How far back to you want to go? One might go back to the classic works of Sophocles or Aristophanes (The Father of Comedy). Would you recognize the names of any of their characters? Perhaps not, but after a little research it might be a good way of impressing others with your vast knowledge.

I especially love the works of Charles Dickens and all his rich (as in character) characters. David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, Tiny Tim, Marley's Ghost. There too, are the lesser known female counterparts to these characters.

Along with Uriah Heep, I love the name Mrs. Malaprop (Sheridan's 'The Rivals'). Not only she a costume idea, but she's a rich and humorous character as well. She's especially interesting because the words 'malapropos' and 'malapropism' are directly traceable back to this characters name.

Because so many famous works are written a century or more ago, the costuming could be more difficult as to the aristocracy in many of these works, but the average characters (usually poor to average) clothing might be assembled from bits and pieces at home....study your character and the period in history. Don't forget that rich dyes, thus bright colors, were unavailable for centuries.

More recently, one might consider the aristocracy of "The Great Gatsby' or the downtrodden characters from 'Tobacco Road'. I don't know how one would build a Holden Caulfield costume (Catcher in the Rye), but maybe one could find some normal teenage clothing from the 1950's at a second hand clothing store.

Taking a side trip, one might also consider dressing as the author (Jack London, Virginia Woolfe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or one of the Bronte sisters) instead of one of their characters.

Halloween costume ideas don't need to come from a costume shop. Perhaps a longtime unread book from one of your shelves and a visit to your attic might be all you need.

A longtime owner and manager of a theatrical, masquerade and Halloween costume shop, I (Russ) have accumulated a wealth of knowledge as it relates to the costume business. More information as to ideas for Halloween costuming can be found at:
