Huawei collaborates with Discovery Channel for Huawei-Discovery Expedition handset

Home > CellPhones > Huawei collaborates with Discovery Channel for Huawei-Discovery Expedition handset Tyler Lee 09/27/2011 09:32 PDT

Huawei has collaborated with Red Bull in the past to introduce the RBM HD rugged handset, which is otherwise known as the Impulse for AT&T. It looks like that collaboration is back, but this time instead of Red Bull, Huawei has teamed up with the Discovery Channel to introduce the Huawei-Discovery Expedition phone, which considering the shows and programs that the Discovery Channel puts out, is a rather fitting name.

First of all, don’t expect anything too fancy from this device. Given its name and the company that Huawei has teamed up with, you would not be mistaken to expect yet another rugged device from the handset manufacturer. If you happen to love the outdoors and go camping or hiking often, then perhaps this handset might have something for you.

The Huawei-Discovery Expedition handset is said to be able to withstand water, dust and electrical shock. It will also come with features that you will need while outdoors, such as GPS, a G-sensor (accelerometer), a compass and even a built-in torch. Oddly enough, for a phone designed for the outdoors (and in conjunction with the Discovery Channel), there doesn’t appear to be a camera.

However if the lack of camera is fine by you, and you have a DSLR on hand for your outdoor photography needs, Huawei has said that the device can be expected in Q4 of 2011, although pricing and carriers have yet to be announced.

LG LU6200 handset leaked

If the recent leak of an LG device is to be believed, for those looking for an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S2, this could be the device you are looking for. Photos of the LG LU6200 have recently surfaced and it looks like it will be exclusively available in South Korea during its launch, with no word if it plans to go global somewhere down the road.

According to the rumors, the LG LU6200 will be almost similar in specs with the Samsung Galaxy S2, making the idea that it will be a competitor to the Galaxy S2 a little bit more believable. It is expected to sport a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and the Adreno 220 GPU with LTE connectivity on board.

Here’s where it starts to differ – the LG LU6200 is said to sport a 4.5” HD display with a resolution of 1280×720, and it will supposedly be the first in the world with AH-IPS display technology, which is said to rival Samsung’s Super AMOLED display while consuming less power.

As far as the other specs are concerned, it will be featuring an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 1.3MP front-facing camera, and in terms of choice of operating system, if the device does indeed exist and the specs are more or less accurate, and its release is slated for some time at the end of the year, Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich may not be a stretch of the imagination.

Japan’s Willcom WX03A handset is the size of a box of mints

We have the world’s smallest camera and a phone that has made it into the Guinness World Records as being the world’s toughest phone, so let’s add on to that ever-growing “world’s” list with Japan’s Willcom WX03A handset, which is reportedly among one of the world’s lightest and smallest phones to date.

The WX03A is compliant with Willcom’s PHS standard, and for those unfamiliar, PHS or Personal Handy-phone System is a mobile network system that was developed by Japan in 1989 and provided a simpler method of implementation compared to GSM. It has also been widely used by Asian countries such as Japan, China and Taiwan. At the moment it appears that within Japan, Willcom is the only carrier left supporting the system.

The handset measures 70mm x 32mm x 10.5mm and weighs only 40g, and as you can see in the photo above, it’s about the size of a box of mints! It features a 1” OLED display with your standard, 10-key dialpad. It can be charged via a micro USB port and will come with a battery that offers 2 hours of talk time or 300 hours of standby.

Willcom expects to start distributing the WX03A come December, but don’t expect for it to hit the US market and we’re guessing that it being a PHS device has something to do with reasons why.

JukeB handset headed to Virgin Mobile

JukeB handset headed to Virgin Mobile | Ubergizmo window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.init({ appId : '139683546053659', status : true, // check login status cookie : true, // enable cookies to allow the server to access the session xfbml : true // parse XFBML }); }; (function() { var e = document.createElement('script'); e.src = document.location.protocol + '//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js'; e.async = true; document.getElementById('fb-root').appendChild(e); }()); Network:Ubergizmo English, French, SpanishUberphones Subscribe to RSS Ubergizmo ReviewsMobileGamingAndroidAppleComputersGadgetsConceptsPhoto/VideoEvents |  Jobs Home > CellPhones > JukeB handset headed to Virgin Mobile JukeB handset headed to Virgin Mobile Tyler Lee 09/14/2011 07:14 PDT

Virgin Mobile users, it looks like the Motorola Titanium will not be the first Android Gingerbread handset to arrive on the carrier, but rather a relatively obscure handset called the JukeB. As the name implies, there’s some sort of music/audio theme surrounding the device, but as to what exactly makes it a music device still remains unknown.

It will be sporting a QWERTY keyboard in candy bar form, much like Blackberry devices and will be running on Android’s Gingerbread 2.3.4. Apart from the QWERTY keyboard and Gingerbread 2.3.4 platform, the rest of the device is far from impressive.

Manufactured by TCT Mobile, the same company that manufacturers Alcatel handsets, the JukeB measures in at 119x58x12.43mm and weighs 122 grams. It sports a camera at the back (resolution is unknown at this point) and a rather disappointing QVGA display with 320×240 resolution.

No word on when it is expected to be made available or how much it will cost, but based on the specs we highly doubt it will be fetching a high price, but for Virgin Mobile users who are looking for an Android handset with Gingerbread running right out of the box, perhaps the JukeB could be worth considering.

Sharp introduces Aquos SH8298U 3D Android handset

Sharp introduces Aquos SH8298U 3D Android handset | Ubergizmo window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.init({ appId : '139683546053659', status : true, // check login status cookie : true, // enable cookies to allow the server to access the session xfbml : true // parse XFBML }); }; (function() { var e = document.createElement('script'); e.src = document.location.protocol + '//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js'; e.async = true; document.getElementById('fb-root').appendChild(e); }()); Network:Ubergizmo English, French, SpanishUberphones Subscribe to RSS Ubergizmo ReviewsMobileGamingAndroidAppleComputersGadgetsConceptsPhoto/Video |  Jobs Contact About Home > CellPhones > Sharp introduces Aquos SH8298U 3D Android handset Sharp introduces Aquos SH8298U 3D Android handset Tyler Lee 09/09/2011 08:09 PDT

Heads up Japan, if 3D phones are your thing and the LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D just don’t cut it for you, it looks like another Sharp Aquos Android handset is headed your way, and this time it will be in the 3D variety with the Sharp Aquos SH8298U.

In terms of specs, the SH8298U will be sporting a 4.2” qHD glasses-free 3D display and is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that is aided by the Adreno 205 GPU. It will come with 512MB of RAM, 2GB of internal storage (which can be expanded via a microSD card slot), dual 8MP cameras at the back (for shooting in 3D) and will be coming shipped with Android’s Gingerbread 2.3.

It will come in red or white and oddly enough it only features three hardware buttons as opposed to the four that we are used to seeing on other Android devices. Based on the specs alone, the Sharp Aquos SH8298U is looking up to be a mid-ranged Android device, but unfortunately no word on price or availability outside of Japan.

Acer launches Ferrari Liquid Mini Android handset

Are you a fan of all things Ferrari? Perhaps you own the Acer Ferrari laptop and maybe some peripherals and accessories as well, but how would you like to own an Acer Ferrari Android device as well?

At IFA Acer announced that they will be releasing another Android device, this time with the Ferrari branding on it, and it will be called the Ferrari Liquid Mini. If the name sounds familiar it’s because it’s basically Acer’s Android handset, the Liquid Mini, with a Ferrari branding on it and painted in trademark Ferrari red.

The bad news is that if you remember the Liquid Mini, you’ll remember that it isn’t a very impressive device what with its 600MHz process, 512MB of RAM, 3.2” screen. The upside is that at least it comes with Android’s Gingerbread 2.3 as opposed to Froyo 2.2. Given how it has used the Ferrari brand name, which implies speed, power and performance, we have to say that the specs seem to imply the opposite, but if you’re a fan of the sports car, this is one handset we think you may want to add to your collection.

Acer has outed an upcoming handset at IFA, but instead of Android it seems that the new handset will be running on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.

Not much is known about the device, and based on the photos it does look rather plain and not very eye-catching. Under the hood it sports a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB worth of storage, and it will be running on Windows Phone 7’s Mango (obviously). It will also feature a 5MP camera, and will more than likely come with the typical phone offerings such as WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.

We can’t say that the specs are very impressive, which means we’re most likely looking at an entry level WP7 device, which is good for those who are interested in giving WP7 a spin but unwilling to shell out for a more expensive handset.
