Looking for a fixed-lens, high-end, compact camera? Ricoh might have the answer for you with their recently unveiled GR Digital IV camera, which is the successor to the company’s GR Digital III. With the GR Digital IV camera, there are some upgrades that hopefully some of you will find to justify the price.

For starters, Ricoh has upgraded the autofocus system on the GR Digital IV, and brought with it a new imagine engine and an improved optical filter. This new autofocus system is said to be twice as fast compared to the GR Digital III. It also sports a brand new 3” VGA LCD at the back of the camera.

The camera itself will be sporting a 10MP sensor with a fixed 28mm/f1.9 GR lens with 4x digital zoom. It will support SD and SDHC memory cards as well as wireless transfer by Eye-Fi SDHC storage cards. For those who love to have more control over the editing of their photos, the GR Digital IV is also capable of shooting in RAW format.

The Ricoh GR Digital IV will be available in two colors – a black color version which will cost $790, and a limited edition white version that will set you back $1,027.

We do know that Panasonic is working on a new kind of LUMIX digital camera that is said to debut at IFA 2011, and the most recent press release touts a winter release date. Just what does this compact digital camera offer? For starters, it allows you to snap 3D photos as well as capture your favorite memories in stereoscopic 3D glory, in HD resolution to boot.

Just how did this particular new camera cram in all the features into a relatively small body? For starters, it will make use of a couple of newly developed 4x zoom lenses thanks to thin, folded optics. With its optical zoom system, it will deliver highly versatile 3D shooting with wide angle to telephoto, not to mention an Optical Image Stabilizer that will also be hard at work regardless of whether you shoot 2D and 3D images/videos.

There are advantages in the incorporation of the twin-lens design, where they can shoot full-pixel 2D photos while capturing 2D videos simultaneously. In addition, this new shooter can also capture 3D HD videos in the AVCHD format thanks to the side-by-side method. But the attendees of the ninth D: All Things Digital conference seemed to like the grilled cheese sandwich made of “sharp” cheddar more than “experienced” gruyere.

In sampling by hungry D9 folks, 53 percent selected “The Kara” (sharp cheddar on potato bread with tomato basil soup) and 47 percent chose “The Walt” (experienced gruyere on white wheat with wild mushroom soup).

That’s according to founder Jonathan Kaplan, who demoed his new company called Melt.

With Melt, the focus is on grilled cheese, in an unusual mashup of smartphones, automation and comfort food.

You can order with Melt’s mobile app or from the Web and have your grilled cheese choice ready for you when you want it in a minute in his casual, fast-food restaurants.

The first stores open in San Francisco in August, but there are many more to come via many millions of dollars in funding from Sequoia Capital.

Obviously, grilled cheese is a very orthogonal move for Kaplan, who brought the world the ground-breaking Flip video camera.

Bought by Cisco for $590 million in 2009, the networking giant closed the unit down in April and killed the Flip. Kaplan still does not know why, he said onstage.

While I still mourn the Flip, I can say that the grilled cheese is pretty tasty.

Ready for His Digital Close-Up: The NYT's Media Dude, David Carr, Talks About "Page One"

While I was in Los Angeles recently, I was invited to a private screening of a documentary about the New York Times called “Page One: Inside the New York Times.”

The film, which debuted at the most recent Sundance Film Festival, opens Friday.

The documentary is by Andrew Rossi, who spent a year following reporters and editors at the famed newspaper, even as the media landscape shifted dramatically due to the impact of digital technologies.

Luckily for me, one of the movie’s principal characters — and I do mean character when it comes to him — is the Times’ quirky media columnist, David Carr.

I met Carr a dog’s age ago, when he ran “The City Paper” in Washington, D.C. He has only gotten more interesting over time, especially as the Web has transformed the news business.

Actually, wrecked the news business seems more the sensibility of “Page One” and also the audience at the screening, which largely bemoaned the troubles that quality papers have gotten themselves into in the age of the Internet.

Of course, the situation at the Times is a lot more complicated than that and there are some significant benefits to readers in the new paradigm, even if it did not help traditional media.

Carr winks and nods to both sides of the debate in the film — his attack on Web bad boy Michael Wolff over aggregation is priceless, even though he clearly loves the Internet’s thrilling possibilities, too.

As I have previously written, what is probably most interesting is that many of the stories covered by the Times in the film are about the technological forces that have put it and other traditional media organizations through the digital ringer in recent years.
