iPhone 4S
Forget how “disappointing” the iPhone 4S announcement was – if pre-order figures are anything to go by, it looks like Apple has yet another hit on its hands with the iPhone 4S. The company has just announced that the number of pre-orders for the iPhone 4S has topped one million in a single day. This puts the iPhone 4S over the previous record holder, the iPhone 4 that had 600,000 pre-orders in a single day.

Contrary to what most people believe, it looks like minor upgrades are what consumers want after all – or many people are finishing the contract for their 3GS and were looking for an iPhone upgrade regardless of what the new iPhone would be. In the end, the numbers do all the talking, and judging by the over one million pre-order customers that Apple has for the iPhone 4S it wouldn’t be fair to call it anything less than a success.

LG Jil Sander E906Looking for a sexy new Windows Phone device to purchase? Well, you might want to hold out for LG’s upcoming creation. The Korean company has worked together with a German fashion designer, Jil Sander to come up with the first Windows “Fashion Phone”. Called the LG Jil Sander E906, it features a sleek and slim device that features the signature Jil Sander electric blue trim. It’s definitely up there with one of the best looking phones I’ve ever seen, though the middle Windows button might be a bit too flash for me. Other than that I think it’s one sweet looking device.

The phone will pack WP first generation phone specs (except that it will ship with Mango) – a 1GHz processor, 3.8? TFT display, a 5-megapixel rear camera, 16GB of storage, and it will be preloaded with custom apps like the Jil Sander app for folks to easily reach the Jil Sander online store. The phone is expected to launch as early as tomorrow (October 7th) and will be available in Europe. No word of a US date or price, but the LG Jil Sander E906 has the potential to be a hot-selling WP7 device – provided that it’s priced reasonably. What do you think of the phone? Video promo after the break:

AA launches first electric/hybrid vehicle training course

Driving a hybrid/electric vehicle isn’t the same as driving a regular fuel-powered vehicle. The point of hybrids and EVs is to minimize the use of fuel, which is not only greener but could potentially be more efficient in terms of mileage, although the latter seems to apply more to hybrids than EVs which have a set range before needing to charge.

Either way, with hybrids and EVs possibly being the choice of vehicles in the future, the AA DriveTech Academy in the UK has launched a training course aimed at hybrid and EV drivers.

The training course is more of a workshop and supposedly will only last about three and a half hours, and covers the differences between conventional fuel/diesel vehicles and hybrid/electric vehicles. It will also teach drivers techniques on how to maximize economy, refuel, recharge and plan their journeys.

Given how EVs have been painted in a negative light due to their short range and long charge times, perhaps this course will address some of those issues. Would a course like this convince you to adopt a hybrid or EV as your next car purchase?

LEGO greenhouse is a world’s first

I cannot believe that I actually let this slip past my radar – sure, the story might have broke cover a week ago, but it is still interesting to know that your average LEGO does much more than simulate the imagination of whoever plays with it. Some enterprising person was approached by LEGO to build the first LEGO Greenhouse in the world, having paraded it at the 2011 London Design Festival.

Needless to say, this is the first fully functional hothouse of its kind that is made out of LEGO bricks entirely, thanks to the brainchild of award-winning designer Sebastian Bergne. He did not do this without any help though, as he was commissioned by LEGO UK to come up with this bricked wonder. Taking around 100,000 LEGO bricks to complete, everything is LEGO in there – ranging from the walls, floors, and even the earth, using either translucent or brown pieces. Of course, the rest of the flora inside like tomatoes, peppers and sunflowers are the real deal.

What’s next? Translucent LEGO bricks with built-in solar panels?

Toshiba FlashAir: world’s first SDHC card with embedded wireless LAN functionality

FlashAirAren’t you just tired of having to dig up that memory card reader or data cable for your camera each time you want to transfer your photographs to your computer? Since cameras don’t normally come with that ability (unless you use your phone as your camera), companies have decided to take the other route by implementing wireless transfer capabilities into the memory cards instead. Companies like Eye-Fi have been doing this for a while with their own brand of SD cards but today, a new player has entered the picture.

Which brings us to Toshiba’s announcement about the world’s first SDHC memory card with embedded Wireless LAN functionality it’s created, called FlashAir. If you’re wondering about the “world’s first” brag, here’s why: while FlashAir can do what Eye-Fi does (wireless transfers to computers, mobile devices etc), it has the additional ability to receive photographs from other FlashAir cards as well. FlashAir cards used in FlashAir-compliant cameras (and other devices) can be used to send and receive photographs – which basically allows FlashAir cameras to function like mini peer-to-peer networks.

Great for big events like parties – where users usually don’t bring laptops or computers – they can share photos with each other at the end of the night just by using their cameras (provided they are all using FlashAir compliant models and FlashAir cards).

No word on pricing but the FlashAir SDHC memory cards will go on sale in February 2012. [Press Release]

Haruki Murakami's '1Q84': The first wordsJuly 18, 2011 | 12:29pmincrease text sizedecrease text size

Harukimurakami_2011 Haruki Murakami has some obsessive fans who'd do anything to get their hands on his next book. When his novel "1Q84" was released in Japan in 2009, it was under a closely held embargo. The book is slated for U.S. release Oct. 24.

Because it's already out there, any hard-core English-speaking Murakami fan could go to an online translator, or better yet, a Japanese friend, to get a peek at what's inside. But they wouldn't have the actual official translation.

But the folks at the Millions do:

The taxi’s radio was tuned to a classical FM broadcast. Janácek’s Sinfonietta -- probably not the ideal music to hear in a taxi caught in traffic. The middle-aged driver didn’t seem to be listening very closely, either. With his mouth clamped shut, he stared straight ahead at the endless line of cars stretching out on the elevated expressway, like a veteran fisherman standing in the bow of his boat, reading the ominous confluence of two currents. Aomame settled into the broad back seat, closed her eyes, and listened to the music.

As the Millions explains, the 1,000-plus page "1Q84" was published in three volumes in Japan, two volumes in England and one in the U.S. The site credits Jay Rubin as the translator for parts 1 and 2 of "1Q84," and Philip Gabriel as the translator of Part 3. A decade ago, Rubin and Gabriel had an email conversation about translating Murakami, now posted on the authors' official website. Rubin wrote, in part:

Phil, I have absolutely no idea why Murakami became such a "breakthrough" writer in the West. From the beginning, I felt he was writing for ME, and I always assume I have quirky tastes not shared by many others.... I did not choose to work on him after a judicious review of all the current Japanese writers that convinced me he was the best: I just knew that I was not likely to find another writer anywhere in the world who spoke to me so directly and personally, so I jumped into his world without the least hesitation. How can so many other readers be feeling that way? Murakami gets inside your brain and does weird things to it.

That wierdness is coming in October to a brain near you.
