If you’re a HTC Thunderbolt owner who was looking forward to the Android Gingerbread 2.3 update for your device, it looks like you’re in for bad news, or good news depending on how you look at it. It appears that the Gingerbread update that has been rolled out to several Thunderbolt owners have been reported to be rather buggy, thus causing Verizon to suspend the update for now.

According to Verizon they are aware of the issue and had this to say:

“It has come to the attention of Verizon Wireless and HTC that customers using the Thunderbolt by HTC have experienced a voicemail notification error with the recent software update. As a result, the update has  been temporarily suspended while the companies work together to resolve the issue. Verizon Wireless and HTC anticipate the update being available soon; customers will be notified directly on their devices when it is ready for download.”

Apart from the voicemail notification error, it seems that there are complaints about issues over the camera, locking, Google Talk, clock app and even HTC’s own UI – Sense. No word on when a new update is expected to roll out, but if you get the notification asking you to update, it looks like you’d be better off running on Froyo 2.2, at least for now until Verizon has officially released a fix.

There is just something about updating your device to the latest firmware version – as long as the update is not gimped, of course. Well, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer has been given an upgrade in the form of Android 3.2.1 Honeycomb, where apart from the standard improvements in different areas alongside security fixes, this update differs from the rest by offering a new feature.

Known as build number 8.6.5.13, those who cannot wait and want to get the update up and running on their device will need to navigate to Menu -> Settings -> About tablet -> Software update, where making a backup prior to the updating process is definitely recommended. If you speak Farsi, then the inclusion of Farsi IME support is definitely welcome, while additional language translation has been thrown into the ASUS App.

Not only that browser performance with Adobe Flash has been improved in addition to browser force-close moments, while your Wi-Fi connection should be all the more stable now. Those who deal with writing messages in Chinese will be pleased to know that Chinese handwriting prediction has been improved to help it better recognize character from each stroke. Anyone given this update a go already?

So we know that Windows Phone’s Mango update is expected to roll out in a week or two, although we’re guessing that not all handsets will be able to get it immediately, and there’s also the issue with waiting for carriers to roll out the update as well. The good news for Dell users who own the Dell Venue Pro smartphone is that if you happen to own an unlocked version of the device or if you’re on T-Mobile/Cincinnati Bell is that you will be getting the Mango update ahead of those on AT&T.

This has been confirmed on Dell’s official website, but I guess the bad news here is that unlocked users who were hoping to get their hands on the update before everyone else is that you guys appear to be on the same schedule as everyone else. If you’re an AT&T user, you can check back the Dell website which will be updated once more information has been obtained.

If you’re a Nexus One user, the good news is that it looks like Google is rolling out an update for you guys! Granted the device is old and has been superseded by the Nexus S, we guess that Google did not forget about you guys out there and has rolled out the Android Gingerbread 2.3.6 update last night.

The update seems to be targeted at unlocked and unbranded Nexus One devices. It doesn’t appear to be clear as to what the Gingerbread 2.3.6 update is bringing to the table, but it doesn’t seem to have any major changes and is most probably a patch to fix security/bugs that may be evident in the previous update. The good news is that while the 2.3.6 update seemed to have messed up WiFi tethering for some Nexus S users, the Nexus One has been reported to have no issues with it.

We all know that RIM hasn’t been doing too well, thanks to its recent Q2 financial report where it announced losses and the disappointing sales of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. RIM had only shipped out 200,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in Q2 – a far cry from the 490,000 tablets that analysts expected the company to move out. Well, in order to turn the tablet into a success, the company is going to do what a lot of companies seem to be doing recently – give it a price cut.

However RIM won’t be cutting the price of the tablet directly – the discount will be given through incentive programs, rebates and deals. It wasn’t mentioned how much this discount will be but we should find out in due time. In addition to the announced price cut, RIM also mentioned that it will be releasing in October: a huge update to the PlayBook that brings all the long-awaited missing features to the tablet: a native e-mail, calendar and contacts app, the Android app player, and video store with 10,000 videos. We can’t wait.

It is safe to assume that the majority of Windows Phone users out there have been waiting for the Mango update for a long, long time ever since they caught whiff of it. Well, hold your breath just for a little bit longer as Vodafone Australia has just announced that they have finished work on the Mango update for the HTC Trophy, and has set out to give it its stamp of approval.

Surely those who are associated with Telstra and Optus will wonder when would their turn be assuming those carriers do have Windows Phone handsets. No idea on how much longer the wait will be over at Vodafone Australia, but we sure are keeping our fingers crossed that our friends Down Under will be happier than usual in the weeks to come.

While we reported that owners of the Motorola DROID 2 who rock with Verizon Wireless will be getting their hands on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update really soon, word from Motorola themselves over at Twitter have pointed out that this will be happening in phases, where among the upgrades will include a new user interface amongst others.

The software update will end up as version 4.5.601.A955.Verizon.en.US, where it will comprise of a far more efficient download manager app that allows you to manage your collection of downloads from web browsing, email attachments and other apps. Apart from that, you can also take advantage of a new “Running” tab that shows off a list of active applications and the amount of storage and memory used by each.

Other changes include multi-touch key-chording, which basically allows you to enter numbers and symbols with keyboard shortcut combos without having to revert to the numeric keyboard mode. In addition, improved word selection and copy functionality lets you select a word via press-hold, while a second press of the selected word copies the selected characters.
