Bogus Netflix Android app steals login credentials

Android users, if you ever try to search for the Netflix app in Android Market or any other third party app store, beware that there exists a bogus Netflix app, which you can easily tell apart based on the photo above. What this bogus app does is that it presents itself to the user as a real Netflix app, requiring the user to enter their Netflix login credentials, which it then stores and sends to a server.

At this point in time it appears that this is pretty much all it does. It is unsure why they would even want the user’s credentials since not much can be gleaned by logging into the user’s account, not even credit card information since only the last four digits of the credit card is displayed at all times. It has been suggested that perhaps this is just a trial run by the developers of this bogus app for something a little more malicious in the future, such as bogus mobile banking app.

Symantec seems to think that the reason why this bogus app has been making its round is due to Netflix releasing their official app earlier this year for select Android handsets only, and only recently publishing its app with additional device support. This gap in release, combined with many users interested in getting their hands on the app might have explained the reason why so many people may have fallen prey to this bogus app.

Amazon Silk Web Browser raises privacy concerns

Amazon SilkWe’ve previously mentioned that Amazon’s Silk Web Browser isn’t exactly new technology – Opera has been doing it for years now. While the latter company has gone about its business without raising any concerns, it looks like Amazon isn’t faring too well in this department. In case you need a refresher, Amazon’s Silk Web Browser is a web browser for its upcoming Kindle Fire tablet, that lets users surf the web at blazing speeds due to its optimization technology. Every page you visit with the browser, Amazon optimizes and compresses it on its own servers before you even get to read it on the tablet, hence the increased speed and faster load times.

But because every page goes through Amazon’s servers, the company is capable of collecting and storing information about your surfing habits. What sort of sites you like to visit, how long you spend on them, and what you do there – Amazon can have access to all those details. Now it may not be a big deal to some people but it looks like the Congress of the United States has a problem with it. Because of that, Ed Markey, co-Chair of the Congressional Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus has posed the following questions to Amazon and expects answers in the next few weeks:

What information does Amazon plan to collect about users of the Kindle Fire?

How does Amazon intend to use this information?

How will Amazon convey its privacy policy to Fire and Silk users?

If Amazon plans to collect information about its users’ Internet browsing habits, will customers be able to affirmatively opt in to participate in the data sharing program?

Amazon has previously mentioned that data collected will be anonymous and that users have the option to turn off feature if they wish, so it’s puzzling to why Congress would make a big fuss about this. Not to mention, if users are unhappy with Silk, they could always just download another browser for the tablet – after all, that’s the beauty of Android: customization. No word on what Congress will do if they are unsatisfied with Amazon’s answers, but what is your take on the issue? Do you have a problem with Amazon collecting data with its Silk Web Browser?

If you frequently attend LAN parties, and you prefer bringing an entire CPU as opposed to a gaming laptop, Thermaltake has a solution for you that will help make it easier on you whenever you have to lug your entire rig around with you.

Introducing the Thermaltake Transporter Carry Bag, which as the name, and the photo above implies, is a casing for your desktop along with multiple pouches and a handle for you to carry your gear around. It measures 600mm x 300mm x 600mm and features two pockets in which you can store a keyboard, mouse, headset, cables, microphone, etc. The entire bag is said to be able to handle a weight of up to 100kg, although we hardly think it will come to that.

Some of the desktop tower cases that is compatible with the Transporter include the Chaser MK-I, Overseer RX-I, Element V, Spedo and Armor+. Unfortunately no word on pricing or availability at the moment.

How many of you out there get around on a bicycle? If you have answered in the affirmative, then surely you would know that keeping yourself well hydrated is of utmost importance. Most bicycles come with a water bottle holder on the frame so that you can slip in a plastic bottle that holds life giving water inside. And if you so happen to own an expensive bicycle, then it makes perfect sense to make sure it remains locked whenever you park it somewhere. Those who are less conventional than the rest would find the Küat Racks Bottle Lock rather interesting, where it disguises itself as a water bottle that fits snugly on your water bottle rack.

Guess this means you’ll need to stash your collection of water elsewhere, perhaps in one of those drinking pouches that adventures and those infected with the wanderlust bug carry around? The Küat Racks Bottle Lock boasts a 5-foot long cable of 7.5mm braided steel which can be rolled up to be stored in a bottle-shaped case. Each $34 purchase comes with a couple of two keys and a lock, tipping the scales at a mere 14 ounces. [Press Release]
