Prior to Blackberry 7, owners of Blackberry devices who wanted to swap contact information had to either scan the QR code of the other person’s Blackberry device or add them via the BB pin, but it looks like those days may be behind us as RIM has unveiled the Blackberry Tag.
This new feature is expected to come as part of an update for the Blackberry 7 operating system, and the idea behind Blackberry Tag is one that iOS and Android users who use the “Bump” application should be familiar with. For those unfamiliar with Bump, it’s an app on iOS and Android that lets users share files between each other simply by “bumping” devices together, but while Bump uses a Bluetooth connection, Blackberry Tag will rely on the NFC technology that has been built into the latest Blackberry phones.
Blackberry users will soon be able to swap contact information, share photos, documents, URLs and other multimedia content simply by tapping their Blackberry devices together. RIM also has plans to share the API with developers, hoping that they will take advantage of this feature to create or integrate it into their current Blackberry apps.
