Literature became popular and primarily emerged in the British Isles during the period between 1066 and 1485, referred to as the medieval period in history. This does not mean that there were no records of writings before. For example, one of the popular literary works that existed before this period is the classic epic named Beowulf. However, a large part of the literary works became popular only during this period.
The setting of these literary works emerged during the medieval period is one of the striking aspects to be discussed about. Many of the classic literary works were set in a background much different from what the writers actually lived in. It kindled a creative realm of fantasy that consisted of perfect beautiful scenic landscapes with pretty damsels and chivalrous knights living in a magical world with special powers. Some of the characters became so popular that they reappeared so long and so frequently to the point that there was a debate on whether they are fictitious or they really existed. One such classic example of this phenomenon is the renowned King Arthur.
This was the time when there were hardly any sanitation laws. The lifestyle and class of living was extremely poor and common people were dying due to several unknown diseases. The sufferers were not only from rural poverty-stricken villages but the elites of the country side too.
People were in search of respite and wanted to forget the real horrors they faced in everyday life. Hence, medieval literature saw many 'Arthurian' based fantasies where people could live in an ideal world at least in their dreams.
Another common aspect of these literary works of the medieval period was the chivalry of the brave nights. In most of the tales, the knights were challenged of their bravery and they go all out to prove their enemies wrong. Chivalry was defined as the power of following one's conscience and defending moral values at all costs. It also means being obedient, trustworthy and loyal in addition to respecting others in spite of the weaknesses. One of the most respected knights of the medieval times is Sir Gawain. Many tales have been woven around this character. Though he has fears like any common man, he is able to go past those and fulfill his promises.
Most of these classic works were first said orally before they were written down. This is because literacy was quite uncommon among people of lower classes and many stories spread far and wide mostly by word of mouth rather than through pen and paper.
