Types of Children's Literature

Children's literature has been around for ages. This type of literature is usually chosen by the parents, but some kids choose their own books to read. Most of them contain illustrations and are pretty straight forward. In the past years, children literature had become famous amongst book readers and today there are many types of children's literature ranging from picture books to bestsellers that have also come to be loved by adults. They can be classified into different categories.

Traditional literature: Characterized by unknown authorship, vague settings and contain known patterns of introductions and conclusions. Most of them have representative characters involved in action with cause and effect and most of them end happily for the hero. The stories are usually brief and simple with repetitive actions, verbal patterns, and magic is a common phenomenon. Examples are folktales.

Fiction: Includes historical, realistic fiction as well as fantasy. Realistic fiction deals with real life experiences and adventure while historical fiction deals with aspects that happened in the recent past and may include biographical and autobiographical books. Fantasy fiction includes stories featuring time travel, heroic quests as well as talking animals and objects.

Picture books: The oldest form of children literature and are mainly used in studying and may include concept books wordless books as well as board books. Other genres include poetry and verse, and joke books. Most poetry and verse books for children are simple and repetitive with a lot of rhyming words. Series are not tied to children's books but most of them are as a result of overwhelming success and popularity among children.

All these books are available for all ages of children and can be found easily in stores or online. They are a great way of educating the child in an exciting manner as well as impart the society's values and diversity in the world as well as in the children at school.
