Some Good Choices For Literature and Film About the Middle East

Looking for literature about the conflict in the Middle East? Some of us feel so far removed from the situation that it is hard to understand how these people really live. This last year, we can measure how much we truly want to understand the issues by the great success of the movie, "Slumdog Millionaire." For those of you out there still curious and wanting to know more about the lives of those people on both sides of the issue, here are some books you may want to consider reading.

As a young adult piece of literature, the book "Samir and Yonatan," by Daniella Carmi, can do a great job teaching adults the power of friendship. An Israeli boy and a Palestinian boy grow to be friends while they both stay at an Israeli hospital. It shows us to look at our enemies differently and see them as real people with pains and sorrows as well. Another great book for youth is "A Little Piece of Ground," by Elizabeth Laird. This shows how the conflict is affecting children and how they possibly think about their place in all of it. Sandy Tolan's "The Lemon Tree," offers some non-fiction reading of the daily struggles of the Palestinian people. This has even inspired a movie about the stories about the separations among the Israelis and Palestinians and how that separation affect lives on both sides of the wall.

These are just some choices in literature and film if you are interested in learning more about the struggles that go on half way across the world. It is hard to understand sometimes when we live such a good life. Reading the stories of these people will often put our lives in perspective, teach us to be thankful and inspire us to create a change for a better life.
