Comparing Latino Literature

Latino literature is widely regarded as one of the most influential genres of them all. After reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao it is important to analyse some of the similarities between Junot Diaz and Sandra Cisneros. There are some very obvious similarities between the themes of romance and the dominant male in Latino society. The similarities extend to all the way to the literary and rhetorical devices they employ and this is what I want to focus on in this thinking piece.

Both the Woman Hollering Creek and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao texts use the Spanish language to lay emphasis on a particular subject. The Spanish that Sandra Cisneros uses is more prolific throughout her short stories than in the Diaz text. The way that Cisneros incorporates the Spanish into her writing has became the prototype for future writers and especially those with a Latino influence. She will always have the word italicized but she will also italicize English words. When an English word is italicized by Cisneros it is often in dialog. This implies that the word is being spoken in a non traditional way. This is either used to emphasize the word itself but Diaz italicizes words in conversation to bring the readers attention to the words that follow.

Where Cisneros only italicized an English word every ten or so pages, Diaz did so on almost every single page. Diaz italicized the word "that" many times. In the case of "that" it is apparent the speaker is probably raising their voice. The italicized English words in the Diaz text most often implied the extreme of either whispering or a louder voice. Sandra Cisneros has works that span across all different genres of literature such as short stories, poetry, and novels. Both Junot Diaz and Sandra Cisneros are great representatives of their Latino roots.
