Most everyone had to take language arts classes in high school and college. If you are like many people, you remember reading books and writing papers about them. However, there is so much more to what is literature and why do we study it.
If you look up the definition of the word literature, you will like get something like "a representative body of works that are admired and appreciated for their thematic and artistic concerns". What does that mean exactly? Literature is works of art, such as poems and novels. These works are studied and admired by young and old alike. They are often referred to as "the classics".
The current study of literature differs greatly than the way they studied it in older times. Today, the language is analyzed. It is more a study of human history and the intellectual ideas of a specific time or civilization.
We study literature to learn from it. You can read about people, places, and events that you can never experience in today's world. Discussing these situations and your reactions to them with others can give you a revelation about yourself and life in the world of today.
A good work of literature will transcend and embody the era that it is from. It will take the reader on a journey through that particular time and place. Literature enriches our lives by making us think, feel, and analyze. So, pick up one of the classics today. You may just enjoy it as you did in the past!
