Garage Sale and Yard Sale - What Do You Call It?

Garage, Yard, Rumage Sales, call them what you want, a home based sale can go by a variety of names. I've seen 'Barn', 'Boot' (in the UK), 'Moving' and even 'Junk Sale', the list goes on and on. Of course there are no rules, so you can call your sale whatever you like. You should avoid misleading names like calling your sale an 'Estate Sale' if it's really just a simple garage or yard sale. The name 'Estate' implies a sale of everything in the house and even the house. Shoppers following a sign to an 'Estate Sale' will expect to find everything from the kitchen utensils and cooking equipment to bedroom furniture and a dining room table. If your not selling everything in your house either due to a death or an out of the country move then you probably shouldn't call it an 'Estate Sale'.

What is a 'Garage Sale' or a 'Yard Sale'? Simply put, it's just some stuff from your house that you no longer need. The basic difference is the location. Rarely does a sale take place in a garage. Most folks have a garage sale in the driveway. A yard sale is typically that takes place in the front yard when the driveway is not a desirable place to display the items. Maybe the driveway is the only place folks will be able to park. Garage and Yard sales are typically only in the garage due to bad weather which forces a last minute move to the garage in order to keep things out of a rain storm.

'Barn Sale' may be a cute name and may seem appropriate if it is taking place in your giant red barn. Using such a name may be sending the wrong message. Are you selling just a red barn or a small 'kit' storage shed. If this is what someone thinks and they are not looking to buy a barn they will avoid your event.

What do you do if your sale is just a bunch of clothes? Try the typical names like 'Garage Sale' and 'Yard Sale' and add another sign like "Lots of Clothes". This sends a clear message and will bring targeted shoppers to your event.

If you have a few items or a couple of the same things to sell try combining your event with your neighbors or friends. Community sales draw large crowds and often times they are many small event with lots of neighbors teaming up to leverage the marketing effort. If you can wait to sell your items try waiting for a larger neighborhood or other community event. You may have a neighbor that will be having a sale soon, ask them if you can place some items in theirs.

If you don't want to wait for a group event you can always try selling your valuables at a free online sale. These online sales are free and easy to setup. Once you setup your online sale you can add and remove items as they sell. You can also add photos of your items as you have the time. Online garage sales are not time limited like an auction. There is no limit to the time you can take and you don't have to re-post your items when they fail to sell in an auction.
