Stories Matter - Why We Study Literature

Off course! Why should we? Man is busy in conquering more and more achievements in the fields of science & technology. Who have time to study literature? It really seems useless. There are so many things in science, computer, technology, business, stock exchange whose study is more profitable than literature. Then what is the use of old stories, poems, novel or drama? One can watch TV for drama instead of reading it in text form. Hundreds of thousands of songs are available everywhere. So why waste time in reading poetry? These are a few questions which may arise after looking at the topic. So what may be the best answer of these questions? Or what may be a solid reason to incline us studying literature?

In fact, many people took literature as it is. Just a bundle of fake stories.They really does not perceive its true worth. So, what literature actually is? To me, it is an interpretation of life. A vast description of past, a remedy of present, a prediction of future. Literature is the life and soul of a society. It describes human life evolution since the birth of "Adam" or may be since the creation of this universe. That may be in a sense is the starting point of literature. Literature is as ancient as man. The oldest way to "gain and transfer "knowledge The story of the creation of man, life and death, heaven and hell and the fall of man is the one transfer from generation to generation and, even after passing millions of years, the events of this story seems as natural as they may be occurred in those days.

Literature has a lot many aspects and characteristics. Although, the basic role of literature is to entertain the reader or to give them pleasure yet, it acquaints us with the hidden realities, aspects and intricate problems of life. It is a mirror to what have been done in past. When we start reading a piece of literature, it took us to our past. Yes there is also History which tells us the stories of past; but in a very plain manner. Mere a description of events without any apparent charm or attraction. It is only literature which absorb us in such a magical way that we feel ourselves among those characters and their life.We can feel the beauty of their dresses, the taste of their foods and the manners of their life. We laugh with them, we moved by their sheer woes and worries. We share their ideologies. Literature, in this respect becomes our source of catharsis. Literature is not merely source of pleasure, it is also the source of information.We can find the glimpses of important historical events in a very natural style. Thus we can see, the emergence of English nation from "dark ages" to enlightenment, the grave impact of Renaissance and reformation, the influence of "Hundred Years' War" on the two nations in the literature of the times of Chaucer. So, love or hate are not necessarily the only topics of literature, it covers the events of the evolution of generations, revolution,development, success, failure, scientific progress in human life. So we should study literature not only for our own source of pleasure but also to gain knowledge.
