At the quarterly financial report today, Research In Motion (RIM) announced some pretty disappointing results. The company announced that it has only managed to ship 200,000 PlayBook tablets for the second quarter of the year. When you take into account that that’s only the amount of tablets shipped out; the number of tablets that actually found their way into the hands of consumers should be significantly less. And that’s not something you would call a success.
And while RIM announced that its new BlackBerry 7 OS devices have been selling really well, overall sales of BlackBerry phones in Q2 have been dropped, with the company only shipping out 10.6 million handsets this year. However, RIM believes that it can bounce back up to its feet in Q3, with an estimated growth of 27-37% for its shipments – talk about optimistic! At least it managed to grow its subscriber base by 40% since last year to surpass 70 million users.
Overall, RIM isn’t doing too well, especially in terms of the BlackBerry PlayBook but its latest BlackBerry phones might be key to the company’s survival. It’s not going to be around for too long if it continues making losses each quarter.
